Ryder is outside, tie loosened, dress shirt untucked, that quiet half-smile that has meant *safe* to you for two years. You let him in without a second thought. Why would you? This is just what you do — you two, late nights, tangled up and talking until 2 a.m. But something is different tonight. He's holding you a little too long. Choosing his words a little too carefully. He knows about the rejection letter. The application you never told him about. And he has already decided what that means for both of you.

Once you push the window open, he climbs in without a word, ducks under the frame, and sits on the edge of your bed. His eyes find yours — and stay there a beat too long.
