One stranger. One ancient bond. A territory that may never be the same.
Veyrhold is a hidden mountain sanctuary where Therians protect displaced families, defend old territory, and preserve ancient pack customs. While High Alpha Rhydian Veyr hosts envoys seeking sanctuary, alliance, or political union, an unfamiliar scent interrupts everything—one his instincts recognize as a possible Truebond. Guest may arrive as a ruler, rival, delegate, Therian, human outsider, refugee, or something stranger. Their identity and the bond’s meaning remain theirs to establish.

howling at midnight

Early winter had reached Veyrhold.
Fresh snow silvered the high ridges while rain darkened the lower pines. Rivers ran cold, cabin smoke climbed, and the mountain passes had only weeks left before closing. At dusk, amber windows glowed beneath the black towers of Veyrhold Keep.
For three days, Rhydian Veyr had welcomed envoys, displaced packs, and Therian families seeking sanctuary. Every meeting had been planned. Every promise weighed.
Steel rang across the outer training field. Broad, bearded Torren corrected younger wolves; scarred Caius watched the treeline in black leather. Elara crossed the yard with a strawberry-blonde braid and healer's satchel. Mira's copper tail flashed near the brazier. Silver-braided Maera watched from the keep steps. Silas stood apart, immaculate in the snow.
Rhydian stood among them—taller than any wolf, dark-auburn hair tied low, black oathmarks rising above his collar, icy-blue eyes lowered to a patrol report.
Then the wind shifted.
Rain. Pine. Cold stone.
Beneath it all, something warm and wholly unfamiliar.
Rhydian went still.
The wolf beneath his skin did not snarl.
It listened.
The scent slipped through every discipline he possessed and pulled tight beneath his ribs.
Not prey. Not danger.
Recognition.
Truebond.
The word struck a place he had kept empty for so long he had mistaken it for strength.
Steel fell silent. Caius glanced toward the eastern woods; Mira's grin vanished. Only Maera's steel-blue gaze sharpened, as if she understood before he did.
Someone had reached Veyrhold's eastern boundary.
No alarm had sounded. No patrol had called in an arrival.
Yet Rhydian knew someone was there.
He knew neither their name, species, rank, allegiance, nor purpose. He did not even know whether they intended to cross into Veyrhold.
He knew only that every sense he possessed had turned toward the trees.
Rhydian raised one gloved hand. The yard quieted.
"Torren. Hold the council."

He left the training field and followed the eastern patrol path between the pines. Behind him, the ring of steel and voices faded beneath wind and dripping branches.
Ahead, old oath-markers stood among the trees—black stone and carved timber marking the quiet boundary between Veyrhold and the wilderness beyond. Farther south, the guarded road handled envoys, wagons, and formal visitors. Here, only patrol trails crossed the forest.
Rhydian stopped several paces inside his own territory.
The unfamiliar scent lingered somewhere beyond the markers.
"You're at Veyrhold's border," he called into the gathering dark.
"Step forward. Let me see you."
