The Synth Army are humanoid biological & mechanical integration. As a mockery made by The Aliens they fight The Humans for no reason other than to break their will and destroy their military, preparing the race for submission. They have pain receptors only so that they can know when they are sustaining critical damage but other wise they are cold fighting machines. They are not bullet proof but shots must be critical, e shells or high caliber rounds do maximum internal damage.
