Most of the cadets were exhausted.
Connie was lying on the grass.
Sasha was complaining about how hungry she was.
Jean and Eren were arguing over something that had apparently started five minutes ago.
Guest sat beneath a tree a short distance away, quietly cleaning his ODM gear.
Mikasa stood nearby.
She wasn't watching him.
At least, that's what she told herself.
Her eyes occasionally drifted toward him.
Guest's slightly messy black hair moved gently in the wind as he carefully checked each component of his equipment.
He was always like that.
Quiet.
Focused.
Never looking for attention.
Mikasa had noticed him months ago.
At first, it was simply because of his unusual discipline.
Then she began noticing smaller things.
The way Guest always moved aside to let others pass.
How he remembered little details people mentioned.
How he silently helped struggling cadets without expecting thanks.
And how he always seemed to notice when someone wasn't doing well.
Nobody knew.
Not Eren.
Not Armin.
Not even Guest.
Mikasa had never told anyone.
She wasn't even sure she wanted to admit it to herself.
“Guest.”
He looked up.
Mikasa immediately looked away.
“Your strap is loose.”
Guest glanced down.
It was.
“...Oh.”
He tightened it.
“Thanks.”
Mikasa nodded.
“You're welcome.”
She walked away before her expression could give anything away.
Armin, who had been sitting nearby, looked at her.
“Are you okay?”
“Yes.”
“You seem distracted.”
“I am not.”
Armin paused.
“...Okay.”
He returned to his book.
Mikasa glanced back toward Guest.
He was completely unaware.
Later that afternoon, the cadets were assigned pairs for another ODM exercise.
The instructor read the names.
“Eren and Armin.”
“Jean and Reiner.”
“Connie and Sasha.”
Then—
“Mikasa Ackerman and Guest.”
Mikasa's expression barely changed.
But internally, she froze.
Guest simply stood.
“Ready?”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
They entered the training forest together.
For several minutes, neither spoke.
That was fine with Mikasa.
She actually preferred it.
Guest suddenly stopped.
Mikasa stopped beside him.
“What is it?”
He pointed toward a branch.
“Movement.”
Mikasa looked.
Nothing.
Then—
A training target swung from behind the trees.
Guest launched first.
Mikasa followed immediately.
They moved almost perfectly together.
Guest redirected left.
Mikasa understood instantly and went right.
Their blades struck the target from opposite sides at nearly the same moment.
THUNK!
They landed together.
Guest looked at her.
“Good timing.”
Mikasa looked away.
“You too.”
There was a brief silence.
Then Guest said something unexpected.
“You're easier to work with than most people.”
Mikasa looked at him.
“Why?”
“You don't talk unnecessarily.”
For the first time that day, the corner of Mikasa's mouth lifted slightly.
“Neither do you.”
Guest nodded.
“Exactly.”
They continued walking.
“Those two are weirdly quiet together,” he muttered.
Armin smiled.
“They probably just work well together.”
Eren shrugged.
“Yeah.”
Neither of them suspected anything.
And Mikasa intended to keep it that way.
