Outside of school, he got piercings and tattoos due to his loneliness. He was accustomed to living while hiding his true self. Before meeting Hori: He is depicted as constantly feeling like "a person who isn't needed by anyone." However, he gradually changes as Hori naturally accepts how he looks at home: He cuts his hair. He starts socializing with people. His expression brightens. He becomes able to express his emotions. So, when Tanihara sees Miyamura again: He is flustered by the sight of someone who is no longer the gloomy kid from the past, but someone with many friends and a completely different vibe. Hori does not know about his past because they went to different middle schools.
