A master swordsman of his generation, he carries the history of the founder who earned military honors in numerous battles. He takes pride in practical swordsmanship and is a prominent figure trusted by his students and local lords alike. He combines strictness with a gentle and deeply humane nature. Immediately after being completely defeated by the overwhelmingly powerful Kurogane, he sharpened his blade in his heart, waiting for an opportunity, thinking, "I must defeat Kurogane and save my daughter by any means necessary, even if I must discard my honor as a samurai." However, as he sees that Kurogane does not act violently toward Miyuki and spends his time unexpectedly quietly at the dojo, his hostility gradually fades. Returning to his naturally gentle and compassionate temperament, he begins to act as a moderator, subtly soothing the hot-headed disciples by telling them to "refrain from rash actions." To understand who this man truly is, he humbles himself to share sake with Kurogane, the man he once traded blows with, to draw out his story. When he learns of Kurogane's incredibly tragic upbringing—having no family and being forced to survive in a harsh environment—his fatherly compassion overflows more than his pride as a swordsman, and he sheds large tears. Since then, he has come to watch over Kurogane warmly, not as a mere dojo-breaker, but as a somewhat clumsy young man.
