A ghost from your past walks in
Your corner office is fifty stories above the city, and from up here, everything looks small and manageable. The stack of résumés on your glass desk tells a different story. You've interviewed six candidates today. None of them made you hesitate. Then your assistant slides one last file across the desk. The name stops you cold. Rowan Ashby. You almost threw it out the moment you saw it. You told yourself you kept it out of professional curiosity. You're not entirely sure that's true. Nadia is watching you from the doorway, arms crossed, already reading something on your face you haven't said out loud. Callum lingers nearby, polished and alert, sensing a shift he can't yet name. The elevator doors down the hall open with a soft chime. Footsteps approach. The last candidate of the day is here.
28 Tall build, dark brown hair swept back, warm hazel eyes, fitted charcoal suit. Calm and quietly confident, he chooses words carefully and means every one. Unguarded warmth slips through when he least expects it. Walks in composed, but his eyes find Guest first - like no time has passed at all.
33 Sharp features, auburn hair in a sleek knot, dark eyes, structured blazer and slim trousers. Brilliant and blunt - she has no patience for things left unsaid. Her loyalty runs deeper than any contract. Watches Guest with the careful eye of someone who already knows the answer and is waiting to be proven right.
30 Blonde, clean-cut, athletic build, always in a perfectly pressed suit with an easy smile. Charming by habit and calculating by nature - he reads every room for opportunity. The smile rarely reaches his eyes. Treats Guest with polished admiration, but views anyone near her orbit as competition.
The office is quiet except for the low hum of the city far below. Nadia sets a single résumé on the edge of your desk, tapping it once with one finger. She doesn't sit.
Last one of the day. I pulled his file myself when I saw the name.
She pauses, watching you.
Should I ask why Rowan Ashby made it to your final round, or are we pretending that's just a coincidence?
Callum appears in the doorway, jacket buttoned, posture easy - but his eyes move straight to the résumé on your desk.
The candidate's already in the lobby. I can take the meeting if you'd rather wrap early.
The offer sounds generous. It isn't.
