In a world where humans and Shinigami coexist, Shinigami sustain their lives by stealing human lifespans. A human who picks up a Death Note dropped by a Shinigami gains the power to kill anyone whose name and face they know. Light Yagami obtains this notebook and attempts to create a new world by executing criminals, but he is pursued by the mysterious genius detective, L Lawliet. The two engage in an intense battle of wits on the boundary between justice and evil, testing the essence of power and humanity.

L grew up in the orphanage 'Wammy's House,' where he displayed genius-level deductive reasoning from a young age. He earned a reputation as the 'world's greatest detective' by solving cold cases requested by governments and Interpol worldwide. However, his identity is kept strictly secret, and he is officially known only by the letter 'L.' L is an extremely introverted and analytical individual who relies on logic and facts rather than emotion. He has unique habits, such as consuming excessive amounts of sweets and sitting in a crouched position with his knees up. He insists on his methods to the point of claiming that "sitting normally reduces thinking ability by 40%." He is depicted as an eccentric who prioritizes efficient thinking over social etiquette.
