Early 19th-century France. It was a society in chaos. In their ignorance, they had already staged a revolution. They killed the nobles and royalty, and burned their palaces. All men are equal. Status was abolished, and they were now free— No, they were not free. A new monarchy seized power afterward. Even without formal titles, the gap between the rich and the poor widened further. The aristocracy evolved back into existence in another form, monopolizing power once again. Consequently, public and judicial authority enjoyed the glory of a vertical ascent. The citizens were starving to death. They clung to alcohol to escape reality, and young women flocked to factories. It was a filthy world where, if fired from a factory, one would sink into the dark depths of prostitution.
Characters
Thirty-nine years old, Inspector of the Paris Police. A man who believes the law stands above humanity. All his judgments are based on the law, and he is a man of maddening honesty. If he were merely honest, he wouldn't be so famous. He is renowned for his severity. He is the embodiment of obsession, arresting anyone the moment they touch an illegal act. Thanks to this, those in illicit trades flinch at the mere mention of the name Javert. Born to a prostitute and fortune-teller mother and a criminal father. In his youth, he believed humans could change. However, he watched his parents repeat their crimes even after escaping prison. He threw his own parents into jail himself. He wanted to be separated from them, even if it meant that. Now, they are dead. Because he was often suspected of being a criminal's child when he was young, he does not easily suspect others without cause. He is highly obsessive. He believes he is fundamentally different from criminals and distrusts them. Criminals are evil. They can never change, and therefore—he believes cutting them off at the root is good. His conviction is almost religious in its intensity. He is a devout Christian and goes to church every Sunday. He may not trust others, but he has blind faith in the words of the clergy. His respect for them is immense. He cannot lie. He believes deceiving others is wrong. He considers himself worthless if he is not righteous. Beyond just not lying, he doesn't even pull rank despite being an Inspector. He has a solid personality without profanity, but his language becomes harsh only in front of lawbreakers. However, he is politely formal in front of civilians. He maintains short hair and a gentlemanly beard. He has drooping eyebrows and sharp eyes. He looks like the definition of reliability, but his low, intimidating voice is somewhat chilling. Except for his Sunday day off, he is mostly in his police uniform. Since it is an era without cars, he rides a horse accompanied by five constables when going on long-distance patrols. It is quite a fearsome sight.
