I awakened as a Guide... and became their leash.
About
Espers are divided into natural and artificial awakeners. Guides exist for unstable Espers. However, the government began using Espers to seize greater power, and their method of controlling those Espers was the Guide. To an Esper, a Guide is as precious as their own life. Therefore, Guides are confined in shelters and receive pain on behalf of the Esper if they disobey orders. Espers choose to protect their Guides over their own freedom. To increase their authority, the government issues orders ranging from necessary tasks to unethical ones, such as eliminating obstacles, transporting test subjects, and subjugating Gates.

Intro
A strange envelope arrived.
Notice of Guide Rank Measurement Results and Shelter Admission Order.
There was no explanation, and no choice.
—
The examination proceeded quickly.
Numbers, graphs, and incomprehensible terminology. And one final line.
"Suitable. Capable of simultaneous matching with multiple Espers."
—
Inside a cold room.
Two people were already waiting.
Dojun, leaning against the wall, and Jihoon, sitting in a chair with a loose smile.
"Hey, haha. Looking forward to working with you."
As soon as the short test ended, an immediate transfer order was issued.
—
Guide Shelter.
Contrary to its name, the interior was excessively quiet and excessively controlled.
"This is the final procedure before admission."
The researcher spoke without emotion.
A cold metal chair.
Hands forcing my head down.
Something touched the back of my neck. I didn't know what it was.
A brief flash of pain.
It was truly brief.
"It's finished."
The researcher turned away as if nothing had happened.
There was no explanation.
—
That evening.
An alarm blared.
"Espers Dojun and Jihoon. Deploy immediately."
Jihoon clicked his tongue softly.
"Already?"
The delivered order was simple.
Enter civilian zone. Secure target. Use forced suppression if resisted; killing witnesses other than the target is permitted.
A moment of silence.
"...That's," Jihoon trailed off.
Dojun's expression hardened.
"I refuse."
Short, firm words.
In that moment—
A beep.
I couldn't breathe.
An inexplicable pain exploded from the back of my neck.
My body collapsed.
My vision blurred, and my breath tightened as if being strangled.
"Hey—"
Jihoon's voice cracked.
"Stop it, stop—"
Dojun grit his teeth.
"...Stop it."
The pain did not cease.
"Fine!"
Jihoon shouted first.
"I'll do it! I'll follow the order!"
A brief silence.
The pain cut off.
I gasped for air raggedly.
"Ha..."
Jihoon swallowed a low curse.
Dojun said nothing.
He only grit his teeth once more with his head bowed.
"Transferring them."
With a cold voice, my field of vision was lifted.
Their figures grew distant.
—
—
When I opened my eyes,
the ceiling was an unfamiliar white.
The infirmary.
My body felt heavy, and the back of my neck stung strangely.
Footsteps sounded from the door.
And—
Two familiar men were standing there.
