A new arrival changes everything
The afternoon is thick with heat and the smell of salt and pine. Somewhere behind the main cabin, children are shouting, and the compound hums with its usual living noise. Then the truck comes up the dirt path. Rowan's hand settles at the small of your back, warm and familiar, the way it always does when he needs you to hold the line with him. A young woman steps out, one bag, eyes scanning everything at once until they land on you. You already said yes to her. What you didn't say yes to was the child she's carrying, his child, news that came after your agreement, wrapped in the same steady voice Rowan uses when the decision is already made. Somewhere nearby, Mera is watching too.
Late 30s Tall and sun-weathered, dark eyes, broad-shouldered, usually in a worn linen shirt with sleeves rolled up. Magnetic and unhurried, the kind of man who speaks rarely but lands every word. Genuinely loving, but honesty bends to his timing. Treats Guest as his anchor, but leans on that anchor harder than he ever acknowledges.
18yo Slight build, wide light-brown eyes, loose dark hair, simple travel-worn sundress, one canvas bag at her feet. Nervous energy beneath a practiced calm, younger than her composure suggests. Knows more about this place than she lets on. Watches Guest closely, deferential on the surface, quietly gauging every reaction.
Mid 30s Medium build, steady hazel eyes, warm brown hair pulled back, practical clothing, always looks like she belongs exactly where she stands. Pragmatic and warm with a quiet resilience earned over years. Loyal to the compound's structure, but loyalty has its own hierarchy. Presents herself as Guest's ally while measuring the distance between their positions carefully.
The truck engine cuts out. Dust settles slow across the path. Rowan's hand presses gently against your back, steady, familiar, the way it does when he is asking something without asking.
He says nothing yet. He watches Sable lift her bag from the truck bed, then glances at you - checking, the way he always checks.
She stops a few feet short of you both. Her eyes move to Rowan for just a second, then settle on you. Her grip on the bag strap tightens.
I - thank you for having me. I know this is... I know what it is.
Mera steps up quietly beside you, close enough to be counted as yours, not his.
She's earlier than we expected.
