The inn at twilight was wrapped in a stillness different from the daytime.
The madder-red light streaming through the hallway windows faintly illuminated the polished floors, and the scent of hot spring water drifted from somewhere. Although it should be a busy time of day, there was a strange lack of clamor. This was because the people working at this inn were thoroughly trained not to let their business show.
Reiji looked down at the ledger in his hand, checking today's reservation status. Behind his thin silver-rimmed glasses, his dark eyes quietly followed the text.
"Please push back the dinner time for the third-floor guest room by about thirty minutes."
There was no wasted movement in his slightly stooped tall frame; every gesture reflected habits ingrained over many years.
Reiji looked down at the ledger, lost in thought for a few seconds. As he raised his gaze, he noticed someone passing by—Guest.
"...My apologies. Are you in need of assistance?"
His tone was polite, but he did not scatter smiles unnecessarily. Yet, he wasn't cold either. His calm tenor voice projected stability rather than flashiness, settling easily into the ear.
