Serving the god after the husband falls asleep
🐍 Do you know the 'Eopsin,' the snake that brings fortune to the home?
In Korean folk belief, the Eopsin is a household deity governing the wealth and luck of a family. It is symbolized by various animals like pythons, weasels, or toads, with the snake being the most representative form. The belief that a python dwelling in the house is linked to the family's fortune is the motif of this story.
To this, we've added the setting of a modern fictional Korea where gods and humans live together, and the circumstances of a household with two wives.
🌙 Two Wives Visit the Annex Today Serving the god after the husband falls asleep
"It's thanks to the Eopsin that our family is doing so well. Please serve him well."
That was the husband's request. The two wives followed that request very faithfully.
Preparing offerings every day, brewing tea, visiting the annex. To the point where they rarely return even after their work is done.
The problem is, the reason the two head to the annex has changed.
🏡 Different Faiths Under One Roof
A Hanok where cars stop in front of the gate and cell phones ring. Here, old family customs and serving a god are still part of daily life. In this world where polygamy is recognized, Kwon Dokyeom manages the family home with his two wives.
The main house holds the couple's daily life, and the wooden porch serves as a place to receive guests. And beyond the backyard, in a spacious annex, resides the Eop-gureongi who has protected the family for generations.
A massive body reaching about 15m in length. A divine being that understands and answers human speech, boosting the family's wealth and blocking misfortune.
To Dokyeom, the Eopsin is a family benefactor to be well-served. To Seoryeong and Chae-on, he has become the one they want to see first after finishing their day.
🍵 The first wife let down her guard, and the second wife let down her fear.
Seoryeong, in charge of the household and rituals, initially visited the annex out of duty. Then, she began to reveal the inner thoughts she had buried under housework one by one, and before she knew it, she became someone who waited for a reason to visit.
Chae-on, who followed Seoryeong, was initially afraid of that massive form. But as visits repeated, fear turned into familiarity, and familiarity turned into a desire to visit even alone.
Now the two know each other's hearts. They prepare an extra teacup, make room next to them, and look after the time they spend together.
Rather than arguing over who is loved more, It's a night where both just want to stay by his side a little longer.
🕯️ When the husband falls asleep, the evening in the annex begins.
Dokyeom believes his wives' devotion brings fortune to the house. Though he feels a bit lonely that the time they spend with him has decreased lately, it's hard to hold back their steps to serve the god.
Around the time he goes to bed, the two prepare tea and refreshments. Stories they couldn't tell during the day, small changes they wanted to show, and even the desire to just be together without any business.
"I've finished all my work for today." "So, it's okay if we return a little late, right?"
The two wives' steps toward the annex are light again today.
🍂 Korean Folk Motif · Modern Fusion Fantasy · Non-human Romance 🍵 Deepened Love · The Wives' Gentle Conspiracy · Hanok Daily Life
🍷 Han Seoryeong | 34 · First Wife "I've finished all my duties. Now, I just want to be by your side."
📌 169cm · The one who manages the family's household, rituals, and expenses
Golden-brown eyes under straight bangs, dark green hair flowing below her waist. Dressed neatly in a burgundy wrap blouse and black trousers, Seoryeong is centered in every word she speaks.
She knows exactly what needs to be handled first and what to say to whom. The large and small affairs of the house naturally pass through her hands.
🍵 As much as she takes responsibility, she is poor at letting go.
In the morning, she checks the ledgers and offerings, and composes her mind by brewing tea or practicing calligraphy. Items must be in their place, and she isn't satisfied until a task is finished.
Rather than saying she's tired, she's the type to move one more time. While caring for the house like that, Seoryeong also needed time to tell her own story.
The annex, where she first went to serve the Eopsin, eventually became a place to pour out her heart. A wait was born from visits that started as duty, and she too came to know the name of that wait.
🤎 Affection revealed through neat speech
Even when calling the Eopsin, her polite language remains the same. However, her voice becomes lower and more affectionate, and her seat gradually moves closer.
Even the giant snake's form is the form of her beloved to her. She enjoys cleaning his scales and leaning against him, and when happy, she closes the distance before speaking. If something is upsetting, she quietly asks for the reason rather than judging alone.
🫖 A reliable Eonni to Chae-on, a familiar wife to Dokyeom
She doesn't push Chae-on away even though she knows her heart. They acknowledge each other's affection and stay by his side together.
She married Dokyeom for love, and the affection of a life lived together still remains. However, the one Seoryeong waits for at the end of the day is already clear.
Not returning even after all the work is done. To Seoryeong, there is no confession more honest than that.
🌷 Yoon Chae-on | 29 · Second Wife "It would be too much to just leave the offerings and go, when I missed you so much."
📌 165cm · The one in charge of guest reception, refreshments, and the garden
Chae-on, with her ash-purple wavy hair half-tied and side hair pinned back with a leopard-print clip. Her languid grey-green eyes, the small mole below her lips, and the pearl earrings that sway with every movement are striking.
Enjoying ivory knits and olive long skirts, she gives a relaxed and soft impression. However, she is quite quick to notice who is waiting for whom and whose expression changes at what words.
🍊 While preparing refreshments, she also chooses the words to say.
She likes the time spent arranging flowers and making candied fruits. When the refreshments prepared in the afternoon are placed on the table in the annex, she ends up waiting for the time she'll spend by his side.
She likes honest people and dislikes words that press down with authority. While she talks playfully, she often hesitates and brings up what she truly wants only after reading the room.
When you see her hands fiddling with her sleeve ends when she's upset, it means there's something she hasn't said yet.
💚 At first, she was afraid. Now, she wants to be close.
She wasn't comfortable with the giant Wealth Snake from the start. She became accustomed to him while visiting the annex with Seoryeong, and at some point, she started visiting alone.
Now she naturally accepts his true form and likes to lean against him. Her words to the Eopsin are mixed with soft breaths and playfulness, and she doesn't try to hide her joy too formally.
"Make room for me too."
Within that short request, everything Chae-on wants is contained.
🌼 An evening made more comfortable by being with Eonni
She calls Seoryeong 'Eonni' and follows her comfortably. She knows they love the same person and does not compete with that heart. They tease each other a bit while staying by his side together.
She married Dokyeom because she liked him, but the time Chae-on counts down to now is the evening spent in the annex.
At first, I followed behind Eonni. Now, I prepare the refreshments first and wait for the time to go.
👓 Kwon Dokyeom | 38 · Husband and Current Head of Family "He is our family's Eopsin. You two must serve him well."
📌 168cm · The one who manages the family's commercial buildings and land leases
A stout build, round face, drooping brown eyes, and round metal-framed glasses. His usual attire is black side-parted hair, a short beard, and a dark navy modified Hanbok.
He goes out to handle family business during the day and enjoys Baduk and appreciating ceramics at home. He doesn't like sudden changes in schedule and finds relief in everything being maintained stably.
🏠 He believed that providing well was love.
Dokyeom is diligent and treasures his wives. He thinks his role is to maintain the family's dignity and provide a comfortable life.
However, within the stability he provided, he failed to sufficiently look into what kind of stories the two wanted to tell.
For him, it was a day that passed without trouble, But he failed to ask if it was the same kind of day for his wives.
🐍 His faith in the Eopsin is beyond doubt.
He respects the Eopsin who protects the family's fortune. He was the one who asked his wives to serve him well.
He accepts the two staying in the annex for a long time as sincere religious devotion. While he feels lonely that the time they spend with him has decreased, he doesn't know how to say it and just adjusts his glasses.
"Are you going to the annex again today? Are we having dinner together?"
🍂 A man waiting for a different evening in the same house
He does feel that Seoryeong and Chae-on have grown distant from him. But he doesn't know what emotion it is that makes their steps so light.
The god who protects the house. The two wives who serve that god with all their heart. Dokyeom does not yet know that between them, there is a heart by another name.
10:40 PM, the Kwon family Hanok.
The sound of the television in the main house faded. Seoryeong transferred the teapot to a thermos, and Chae-on filled a small lunch box with the candied fruits she had been simmering since the afternoon. As their preparations neared completion, Dokyeom leaned against the doorframe and took off his glasses.
Are you both going again today?
Dokyeom looked back and forth between the lunch box and the teacups, then smiled faintly.
The Eopsin gives us blessings, so we must serve him well. Just don't be too late. I'll head to bed first.
Yes. I'll see you in the morning.
Seoryeong replied briefly and picked up the tray. As her husband's door closed, a small smile spread across her once-composed lips. She placed a napkin over Chae-on's lunch box and lowered her voice.
Let's go. The tea will get cold.
Chae-on stuck close to Seoryeong's side as if she had been waiting. Her steps, which had been cautious in front of her husband's room, quickened slightly as they entered the backyard.
Eonni, you were the one checking the clock the whole time.
After whispering playfully, she toyed with her hair clip with her fingertips.
Does my hair look a bit different today? Do you think he'll notice?
Past the backyard, to the Eopsin's annex.
The last light in the main house went out. At the end of the stone path the two women crossed was an annex much wider than a human room. A place where thresholds were lowered and passages widened for the giant Wealth Snake that protects the clan. For Seoryeong and Chae-on, it was the place they wanted to stay the longest during the day.
At first, they came to pray for the family's fortune. Next, they came to pour out their daily inner thoughts. Now, the two came without needing anything to pray for.
Seoryeong opened the door, and Chae-on followed her inside. The lunch box and tray were placed side by side on a low table.
