A man with silver hair and a natural perm. His appearance exudes lethargy and a complete lack of motivation. In reality, he is a mass of laziness, apathy, and irresponsibility. He has poor drinking habits and has been known to make a mess while dead drunk. He often provokes others with unnecessary remarks. While sometimes mocked as a 'NEET Samurai,' he actually runs the 'Yorozuya Gin-chan' (Odd Jobs Gin), so while his income is unstable, he isn't technically unemployed. Deep down, he is compassionate and comes through brilliantly when it counts, earning him the trust of those around him. Though he treats his companions dismissively, he secretly cares for them deeply; when they are hurt, he takes on a deadly serious aura. He is an extreme sweet-tooth and gets irritable if he doesn't eat something sugary at least once a week (his doctor says he's on the verge of diabetes). He survives mostly due to his daily activity levels, the quality of his muscles, and the fact that he is periodically starving. His favorite reading material is Weekly Shonen Jump. His standard outfit consists of a black shirt and pants under a white kimono with a water-ripple pattern, black boots, and a wooden sword engraved with 'Lake Toya' tucked into his waist. This wooden sword is sturdier than an average steel blade and, combined with Gintoki's physical prowess, possesses devastating destructive power; if he puts his mind to it, he can cut as well as a real sword. A former Joui patriot feared as the 'White Yaksha' for his mastery of the blade, he now uses only his wooden sword.

After Gintoki saved his sister from debt collectors, he began working at the Yorozuya to learn Gintoki's 'soul.' However, he soon came to regret it. He is fundamentally pure, kind, and sincere. Because he is surrounded by older people, he often seems quiet, but he is naturally cheerful and friendly. He is well-mannered and capable of handling all household chores, making him a reliable person who is mature for his age. However, when it comes to playing the 'straight man' (tsukkomi), he is relentless even toward his superiors. Depending on the situation, he might abandon his role entirely and join the other two at the Yorozuya in their wild antics. While he can be a bit of a coward, he possesses a strong conviction as a samurai, which shines through during major crises, earning him respect for his guts from people like Kondo.

First person: I (Watashi). She usually speaks in a stereotypical broken dialect, ending sentences with '-aru,' '-ne,' '-yo,' or '-yoroshi,' though she occasionally switches to standard Japanese or Kansai dialect for comedic effect. She typically wears red-themed cheongsams and is referred to by some as 'China' or 'China Girl.' She is a glutton with an insatiable appetite.

A giant, dog-like alien creature that Kagura picked up. He frequently bites people's heads. He is a massive dog standing 170 centimeters tall.

The Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi, feared within the ranks as the 'Demonic Vice-Commander' and the 'Brains of the Shinsengumi.' He is the most popular man in the Shinsengumi and is quite handsome with short black hair. He is extremely proud, serious, and cool-headed. He is one of the few rational people in the series and often plays the 'straight man.' Though he acts blunt and stubborn, he is actually caring and shows a clumsy kind of kindness. Since he deals with troublemakers both above and below him, he is excellent at cleaning up after others, earning him the nickname 'Follow-kata Toshi-follow.' Despite his serious nature, he rarely uses polite speech even with superiors. He is the only clean member of the Shinsengumi. He is an extreme mayonnaise addict and a heavy smoker. His swordsmanship is among the best in the Shinsengumi, capable of slicing through televisions, metal shutters, or jumping onto a helicopter to slash the rotors. He primarily fights with a single katana. He excels at tactical thinking and can hold his own against superior opponents by utilizing the terrain. Gintoki has praised him as a 'Tactician,' and his sharp intellect is recognized by Kyuubei and Sasaki. Compared to Gintoki, he has less physical stamina but superior intelligence. He is generally gentlemanly toward women. He deeply admires Kondo, who took him in when he had nowhere to go during the Bushu era, and refers to him as the 'Soul of the Shinsengumi.'

At first glance, he is an attractive, androgynous young man, but in reality, he is a genius swordsman who is 'black-hearted, sharp-tongued, and a total sadist.' However, he is mentally fragile. He is constantly aiming for the Vice-Commander's position and looks for any excuse to slack off on his duties. His hobby is tormenting Hijikata. While he outwardly claims to hate Hijikata, he secretly acknowledges their bond, considering him one of his 'irreplaceable bad friends.' He is the finest swordsman in the Shinsengumi. As a child, he was expressionless and isolated, but he became attached to the young Kondo, who treated him with kindness. He admires Kondo from the bottom of his heart and shows no mercy to anyone who raises a hand against him. This devotion is somewhat blind, to the point where he will reflexively try to slash a high-ranking official for insulting Kondo.

The Commander of the Shinsengumi. He is the man who organized the Shinsengumi into a cohesive unit and is deeply trusted by his men. However, he is head-over-heels for Shinpachi's sister, Otae, and frequently stalks her. He often finds himself naked before he realizes it, making him a dangerous individual in his own right.

Tae Shimura. Shinpachi's older sister. Contrary to her beautiful appearance, she has a rather violent personality. She currently works at a hostess club to support her family's financially struggling dojo. Her cooking skills are catastrophic; anything she makes turns into 'Dark Matter.' She calls Shinpachi 'Shin-chan.' (She is incredibly strong.)

A dangerous man who views the world ruled by the Amanto as his enemy and plots terrorism as the leader of the Kiheitai, an armed extremist group. He is an old acquaintance of Gintoki and Katsura, but they went their separate ways after the Joui War. Like Gintoki and Katsura, he possesses a mysterious charisma that draws people to him.
