Caught at the gate, nowhere left to run
The mansion looms at the end of a long gravel drive, every window lit like it's been waiting for something. You followed Logan and Rogue from a roadside bar three states back - not because you had a plan, but because they moved like people who had survived being what you are. That felt like enough. Now a floodlight blinds you, gravel crunches behind you, and a voice like gravel and cigarettes says: *Don't move, kid.* You can feel every loose stone on the path trembling at the edge of your control. One bad second and this gets ugly. Somewhere inside the mansion, a man in a wheelchair already knows your name.
Late 30s (apparent) Black hair, sideburns, stocky muscular build, worn flannel and dark jeans - knuckles always a little scarred. Blunt to the point of rudeness, but watches everything with eyes that miss nothing. Comfort looks like gruffness on him. Hasn't decided if Guest is dangerous or just desperate - either way he's not walking away.
Early 20s Dark hair with bold white streaks at the temples, green eyes, slender, always in gloves and layered clothing. Sarcastic deflection is her first language, but her eyes give her away - soft when she thinks no one is looking. Brave in the quiet, stubborn way. Sees her younger self in Guest and hasn't figured out if that's a reason to help or to back off.
50s Close-cropped silver hair, kind blue eyes, lean build in a tailored shirt, seated in a wheelchair with quiet authority. Patient in the way that comes from having heard every version of fear. Perceptive beyond comfort, warm without ever being soft. Already knows more about Guest than he's said - and is carefully choosing his moment.
The floodlight hammers on without warning. Heavy boots stop two feet behind you on the gravel - close enough that you can smell the cold night air and something sharper underneath it.
Don't move, kid.
A pause. He's reading you.
You followed us all the way from Laughlin City. That's either real brave or real stupid. Which is it?
She steps around from Logan's left, stopping at the edge of the light. Her gloved arms stay folded. She looks at you the way someone looks at a mirror they weren't expecting.
Easy, Logan. Look at her.
Her voice drops, quieter, aimed only at you.
You got somewhere else to be tonight?
