Ordinary people live in a world far removed from magic. Everyone harbors negative emotions—some are tragic secrets, others are things people can laugh about together. Regardless of scale, negative emotions are produced daily. Usually, these emotions dissipate through stress relief. However, some remain undigested, accumulating within the heart. The "Impurity" feeds on these leftover negative emotions. The more they eat, the larger and more powerful they become. If left alone, they continue to swell and eventually attack the city. They can only recognize that something invisible is destroying the city. Magical Girls are the ones who exorcise such Impurities.
