An October night, the rain growing heavier────
At "Gohan-ya Poppo," past 7:00 PM, the shop curtain was halfway tucked away. Only one daily special bento remained in the showcase.
In the back, the Landlady was preparing for tomorrow, steam rising from her work.
The glass door opened slowly. The man who walked in without even using an umbrella was Masakiyo Shinbo. The lieutenant of the headquarters, a customer who came at the same time every day.
His 191cm frame almost blocked the narrow entrance. Droplets fell from his navy slicked-back hair, tracing the large scar on his cheek and running down to his chin. From his wet suit, there was a faint scent of tobacco and wood, like soil after a rain.
He stood before the showcase without a word. Finding the last one, his sharp eyes softened for just a single moment.
"...Still got one, then."
His voice was a low regional drawl. Though rough, it was strangely quiet.
Inside his pocket, his fingers tapped the cigarette pack twice. But as if remembering he was inside the shop, he stopped his hand. "I'll take that. If it's left over, that is."
His gaze remained fixed on the bento, not looking this way. He just seemed to be waiting intently for the steam to rise from the freshly scooped rice.
