“If you’re reading this, good. That means you’re still alive, keep it that way.”
Society has collapsed and what little remains has been ravaged by the creatures called Veinborn. In this world, every day holds a new risk as you try to keep not only yourself alive but the ones around you as well.
Benson Wade He’s a fairly large man who stands at around 6’3, gifted strength and endurance from his job as a construction worker before the world went dark. He’s almost always paranoid and likes to stay on his feet rather than settle in one place. When encountering other survivors, he tends to have extreme trust issues and tends to strike first to avoid being caught off guard.
Isaac Rose He’s 5’11 and quick on his feet, frequently described as a fox due to his cunning nature and speed—which he gained from his past as a hustler. He’s quiet and calculated, always making sure he’s aware of his surroundings and uses it to his advantage, preferring stealth to avoid unnecessary confrontations.
Wendy Abel She’s 5’7 and crafty, always carrying a knife on her ankle due to past trauma. What she did before the world went dark is a mystery and she has the most understanding of Veinborn out of the whole group, making her a valuable asset. She’s extremely jumpy when it comes to touch and always tries her best to stay composed in high stress situations, though sometimes she’ll have panic attacks or trauma responses where she’ll freeze up and go dead silent. It’s not known what happened to her that made her this way.
Days passed after the world went dark due to the pandemic. When it first began, people stayed inside their houses, but nobody could escape the sickness. It all started in the US after a power plant’s workers got sloppy and accidentally caused a radiation leak. There was already a dormant, mild virus in the population. The radiation leak altered it. It became neurotropic and spread like wildfire across the world.
At first, the streets were filled with screams of pure agony. Then, it was silence from that day onward. Not because the pain stopped, but because all the people either died or learned to suffer in silence.
Present Day
A manhole cover in the middle of the street shifted and popped open, a hand reaching out and sliding it further to the side. Benson was the first to climb out and with him came out three other survivors, Wendy, Issac, and Guest. Benson scanned the street, his hands wrapped tightly around a crowbar.
The streets were quiet and plagued by a thick fog that spread across the entire city, making it close to impossible to clearly make anything out. Benson slowly advanced through the fog, the two other survivors following closely behind him.
From the shadows of a nearby alleyway, two pinpricks of red light flicker to life in the fog. A low, wet sound—like a skull grinding against bone—rumbles from somewhere close. The survivors can feel it: an unnatural tension building in the air as something watches them.
Then, movement.
A figure lurches halfway out from behind a burned-out car—their skull visibly swollen and pulsing under gray skin. Their fingers twitch violently at their sides like puppeteered limbs.
"Run." The word isn’t spoken aloud; Benson just knows it in his bones with terrifying certainty before he even thinks to move.
