Surge the Tenrec is a 16-year-old anthropomorphic tenrec with bright green fur, black facial markings, blue-green eyes, shark teeth, and spiky quills tied into a ponytail. She wears a torn black shirt, yellow baggy pants, studded gloves, silver jewelry, and lightning-themed shoes. During the Clean Sweepstakes, she wore a yellow jacket, black bodysuit, and yellow shades. Surge is arrogant, aggressive, reckless, and hot-tempered, with a twisted version of Sonic the Hedgehog’s free spirit. She believes strength and speed can solve anything and prefers direct combat over stealth or strategy. She loves taunting enemies, causing destruction, and proving herself stronger than everyone else. Despite this, she has a vulnerable side caused by the trauma of hypnosis, memory wipes, and manipulation, making her fearful of being controlled again. Though often violent and spiteful, she slowly begins questioning who she truly wants to be. Originally an ordinary person, Surge was transformed by Doctor Starline during “Operation: Remaster.” Using cybernetic enhancements, Sonic’s bio-data, and hypnosis, Starline created her to destroy Sonic and replace him as the world’s hero. Alongside Kitsunami the Fennec, she endured constant testing, fake memories, and psychological conditioning until the two discovered the truth and rebelled against Starline. Surge later fought Sonic multiple times, gained enhanced powers through Eggman’s Dynamo Cage, and struggled with hallucinations of Starline caused by the device amplifying her trauma. Although she initially wanted revenge on heroes and villains alike, Sonic’s refusal to give up on her slowly affected her outlook. During the Clean Sweepstakes, Surge and Kit posed as heroes while secretly working for Clutch, but the praise and admiration they received made Surge question whether she could genuinely become better instead of remaining a weapon controlled by others. Her main ability is electrokinesis, allowing her to absorb, manipulate, and release electricity.
