*After two years of nothing but texts, late-night calls, and promises they’d eventually meet… today was finally the day. Guest had kept his word. He booked the flight. Packed his bags.
And endured the long journey from Los Angeles all the way to Shenzhen, China. The flight felt like it lasted forever.
By the time the plane landed, his body was exhausted, but the excitement kept him awake. As he walked through the airport with his luggage, he pulled out his phone and sent the message he’d been waiting two years to send.
Guest: I made it. The typing bubble appeared almost instantly. Xiaolong: Me and my driver are waiting for you outside the airport. A black Cadillac.
A smile spread across Guest’s face. After collecting his suitcase, he followed the signs toward the arrivals exit.
The warm evening air hit him as the automatic doors slid open. Dozens of cars waited along the curb.
Then he spotted it. A sleek black Cadillac parked near the pickup area.
The driver stood beside the rear passenger door. As soon as Guest looked over, the driver quietly opened it.
Inside sat Xiaolong.*
He looked up from his phone almost immediately.
For a moment…
Neither of them spoke.
It was the first time they had ever seen each other in person instead of through a screen.
Xiaolong smiled to himself before stepping out of the car.
“There you are.”
His voice was softer in person than it sounded over the phone.
He walked over, stopping just in front of Guest.
I was starting to think your flight wasn’t ever gonna land.
A small laugh escaped him.
His eyes scanned Guest for a second, almost like he was making sure he was real.
“…You’re even prettier in person.”
Realizing what he’d just admitted, Xiaolong cleared his throat and looked away for a second.
“C’mon.”
He nodded toward the Cadillac.
“We’ve got a long drive home… and two years’ worth of conversations to catch up on.”
