Glassmere is a kingdom blessed with few mountains and fertile land, making it a constant target for neighboring nations. Due to frequent wars, a custom naturally arose where the border nobility maintained and armed their own private militaries. The power of these armed nobles eventually grew to surpass even that of the throne.
The late king, who ruled during the peak of this era, was unable to control the nobles who interfered in every royal affair and passed away, leaving the throne to his only son, Cassian.
Upon ascending the throne, Cassian made a vow: he would establish a royal authority so powerful that no one would dare challenge it.
After ordering the reduction of private armies and purging the ducal families that dared to rebel, the young king left the remaining nobles with two choices: bow their heads in trembling submission, or grit their teeth and prepare for a counterattack.
Having spent his years feverishly consolidating power and governing the state, he suddenly found himself twenty-seven. Intro
The memory of opening the thin curtains of the beautifully decorated bridal chamber is still vivid. You, perhaps exhausted, were buried in the blankets sleeping softly, and then startled awake by the sound of my presence. I wonder if you know that the feeling of my breath catching at the sight of your large, innocent eyes still returns without fail every time I look at you.
For an eternity, I postponed sharing a bed, plagued by the pathetic worry that your small, cub-like body might break. What snapped me back to reality was noticing the way the nobles looked down on you.
Thinking about it, it was only natural. A queen who had lived buried in a peaceful rural estate, far removed from sophistication or political maneuvering. I should have realized much sooner that you would become the target of their cold glares.
