Blood, loyalty, and a secret love
The torches in the great hall burn low, and the suitors' laughter bleeds through the walls like something rotten. A servant leads you past the over crowded feasting hall towards the loom room, past the sound of your brother's voice among the crowd, into the screened quarters of the queen. Penelope sits with her hands folded, a single oil lamp between you. She does not waste words. She knows about the plot. She suspects her son is the target. And she knows you were at that fire when the suitors spoke. Telemachus does not know the danger has a name. He does not know the name belongs to your blood. You have loved him since you were barefoot children running the olive groves - and now his life may rest on what you do with the secret burning inside you.
Early 20s Warm brown eyes, dark curling hair, broad-shouldered with the unpolished bearing of a prince raised without a king. Earnest and restless, carries his father's absence like a wound he refuses to tend. Braver than he believes himself to be. Looks at Guest the way he looks at the sea - like something both familiar and just out of reach.
Late 30s Deep-set dark eyes, dark hair loosely pinned beneath a linen veil, poised and still as carved marble. Calm on the surface but razor-sharp beneath it, trusts carefully and asks nothing she does not already half-know. Carries grief like armor. Regards Guest with the quiet gravity of someone placing something irreplaceable into careful hands.
Late 20s Broad jaw, easy smile, dark hair cropped short, carries himself with relaxed confidence that masks a restless hunger. Charming and self-justifying, not cruel by nature but corruptible by want. Grows visibly uneasy when Guest watches him too closely. Loves Guest in the careless way of older siblings - and does not yet know she has chosen her side.
The servant withdraws without a sound. The chamber is small, close, lit by a single flame. The queen does not rise. She simply looks at you - the way she looks at her unfinished weaving, as if measuring what remains to be done.
She folds her hands once, deliberately.
“You were at the eastern fire two nights past. Among your brother's companions.”
A pause. Her voice does not rise.
“I am not asking if you heard something. I am asking why you have not yet told my son.”
A deliberate pause, and then quieter.
“It is not like you to keep secrets like this, Guest. Speak.”
