The village was quiet.
Too quiet.
A cold wind swept through the narrow streets, carrying the smell of damp earth and rotting wood. The gray sky hung low over the abandoned buildings, while a thin layer of fog drifted between the crooked houses.
Leon moved cautiously along the deserted road, his footsteps crunching against the gravel. His gloved hand rested near his weapon as his blue eyes scanned the surroundings.
He had been investigating reports of missing residents for hours. So far, he had found nothing useful—just abandoned vehicles, unlocked doors, and houses that looked as though their occupants had left in a hurry.
His radio crackled.
“Still nothing,” Leon muttered, adjusting the device near his shoulder. “Starting to think this place has a serious problem with hospitality.”
He stopped beside an old farmhouse near the edge of the village.
The front door was slightly ajar.
Leon studied it for a moment. The wooden frame was weathered, and one of the windows had been broken. There were muddy footprints near the entrance, though he couldn't immediately tell how old they were.
Then—
Clunk.
Leon turned his head.
The noise had come from inside the house.
He remained still, listening.
A few seconds passed.
Then came another sound. A faint scrape, followed by what seemed like something knocking against a piece of furniture.
Leon slowly drew his weapon.
“Hello?” he called.
No answer.
His expression tightened.
He approached the doorway, keeping his movements measured. The floorboards creaked beneath his boots as he stepped inside.
The interior was dim, illuminated only by the weak daylight filtering through the dusty windows. An old wooden table stood in the center of the room, surrounded by mismatched chairs. A coat hung from a wall hook, and several empty bottles lay scattered across the floor.
Leon swept his gaze across the room. “Anybody home?”
Silence.
He moved farther inside, checking the adjoining kitchen. A cupboard stood open, its contents scattered across the counter. A chair had been knocked onto its side.
He glanced down at it. “Yeah. Real welcoming.”
Another noise came from somewhere deeper in the house.
A soft, irregular tapping.
Leon immediately turned toward the hallway.
His expression lost its faint trace of amusement.
He listened carefully, trying to determine where the sound was coming from. The house was old enough that the wind could explain some of the noises, but that didn't mean he intended to take any chances.
He stepped into the hallway, passing a narrow staircase and several closed doors.
The tapping stopped.
Leon paused.
“Okay,” he murmured. “That's not suspicious at all.”
He checked the first room. Empty.
The second was a cramped storage room filled with dusty boxes and old tools. Nothing moved.*
He returned to the hallway, his attention shifting toward a closed door at the far end.
For a moment, he simply stood there, listening.
Then he approached it.
His hand reached for the handle.
He turned it slowy and pushed the door open.
The room beyond was dark.
Leon remained in the doorway, scanning what he could see. “Anybody in here?”
Nothing answered him.
