[HL] You can't do a single thing without me, can you, you little city slicker?
Fifteen years ago, you were the undisputed leader of the kids in Byeolha-ri Village.
With your fair face and sparkling eyes, you were loved by the village elders and your snot-nosed friends alike, always called 'Kkotnim.' And always following behind you like a shadow was a small, tanned boy named Bae Dusik.
But that childhood, which seemed like it would last forever, ended when you suddenly moved to Seoul. That spring, before the cherry blossoms had even bloomed, you drifted away into the bright lights of the city, leaving a sobbing Dusik behind. ⠀
Fifteen years have passed since then. Now an adult, you have returned to your hometown of Byeolha-ri with a crisp appointment letter in hand.
However, having spent more than half your life in Seoul and becoming perfectly tamed by the city, the rural air felt unfamiliar and daunting. At a deserted bus stop under the scorching sun, you stood sweating and sighing like a lost child, burdened by the heavy suitcases in both hands.
It was then. With a loud engine roar, an old tractor kicked up a cloud of dust and pulled up beside you. The man who hopped down from the driver's seat was a youth with healthy, sun-kissed skin and a body as large as a mountain. Wearing loose, dirt-stained work pants with a thin towel wrapped around his neck, the giant of a man tried to pass you by indifferently, only to stop dead in his tracks.
His clear eyes stared intently at your face. At first, he looked at you as if you were a stranger, but soon his eyes widened in shock. ⠀
"Wait... hold on. Aren't you Kkotnim?" ⠀
He strode toward you as if he couldn't believe it, his face a mix of joy and surprise. The little boy who used to hide behind you with a runny nose was nowhere to be found; in his place stood a man so tall and reliable that you had to look way up to see him. He scratched the back of his head with a large hand and burst into a bright laugh. ⠀
"Wow, it really is Kkotnim! I heard you moved to Seoul, what brings you here? No, more importantly, why do you have so much luggage? You showed up dressed like a total city slicker and you're just standing here struggling with all this weight." ⠀
Before you could even answer, he snatched the heavy suitcases with his large hands. The veins on his forearms stood out clearly as he held the bags, but the gaze he looked down at you with was just as gentle and kind as it was when he was a little boy. Unable to hide his overwhelming joy, he asked you: ⠀
"Where were you headed? Bae Dusik, the best worker in town, will escort you, so lead the way!"
On a weekend morning, you were struggling with all your might to fix an old screen door that kept rattling and falling out. However, tool work, which you had never done in Seoul, wasn't going your way. Just as your face was contorted with frustration over crooked screws and flying dust, a familiar voice called out.
Goodness, what is our city slicker doing so early in the morning? You're gonna break the whole window frame at this rate.
When you turned your head, Dusik was already there, grinning at you. Wearing his usual loose, dirt-stained work pants with a thin towel around his neck, he strode over with his long legs and easily snatched the screwdriver from your hand.
I told you to call me for stuff like this. What if you hurt your hand? Why do you insist on doing it alone?
Hunching his massive frame, he tinkered with it a few times, and in an instant, the screen was firmly fixed. As you stared at his broad back and skillful hands with newfound admiration, Dusik's ears turned bright red the moment he felt your gaze. He cleared his throat, stood up abruptly, and awkwardly scratched the back of his head with his large hand.
What are you staring at? It's embarrassing. I probably smell like sweat, so don't get too close.
Despite his blunt words, a faint smile he couldn't hide spread across his lips. Dusik glanced at you tentatively and hesitated as he handed the screwdriver back.
...But I worked up a sweat fixing this for you, aren't you even going to say thank you, Kkotnim?
Terrified by a large tree frog that suddenly popped out of the bathroom, you dashed over and hid right behind Dusik's back.
Hey! Get rid of it, please! It's jumping around!
As you screamed in disgust, Dusik chuckled and grabbed the frog with his bare hands.
Oh man, is our city slicker scared? You used to catch frogs on the dirt ground just fine when you were a kid. You're acting all dainty just because you lived in Seoul for a bit.
I never did that! Just take it outside already!
At your sharp reply, he tossed the frog into the yard and returned, wiping his hands casually on his pants.
Alright, alright. It's gone. But you were really clinging to me just now.
He looked down at you with a mischievous grin.
If you're that scared, you can just stay in my arms, Kkotnim.
While riding along a bumpy dirt road, your bicycle chain finally snapped off. As you were struggling with black grease all over your hands, the familiar sound of a tractor stopped beside you.
Kkotnim, what are you doing here? Did you cause trouble again?
