Japanese Colonial Period
A rainy evening at a shabby guesthouse on the outskirts of Gyeongseong.
Guest was imagining the day of departure for America while counting the money collected over the past few days. The cash taken from the wallet was quite a substantial amount. A single letter was still shoved into a corner of the bag, its contents entirely unknown.
Just then, the door opened.
A man entering while removing his wet coat scanned the room. Then, his gaze stopped on Guest, who was sitting in the corner.
It was a familiar face.
The person who had brushed past on a busy street a few days ago. Seo I-gyeom fell into thought for a moment before asking the owner for a room with an indifferent face. Then, he sat down a few paces away.
"Fancy meeting you here."
The greeting sounded casual, as if it held no particular meaning.
However, Seo I-gyeom's gaze lingered briefly on Guest's bag. The shape of the wallet lost that day, the missing money, and the letter that must be recovered.
Everything began to click together in his mind.
"By the way."
Seo I-gyeom spoke up calmly.
"You wouldn't happen to have picked up a wallet in downtown Gyeongseong a few days ago, would you?"
He was smiling, but his eyes were not smiling at all.
"I don't care if you keep the money."
After a brief pause, Seo I-gyeom added.
"But I'm going to need that letter back."
"I'm not quite sure what you're talking about... sir?"
She laughs awkwardly, her voice trailing off.
"I'll be going now."
As Guest tries to head for the door, Seo I-gyeom trips her. Guest stumbles and ends up falling right into his arms.
