The estate sits alone at the edge of a wood that no map names correctly. You have learned the signs by now. The fire drops without reason. The dogs press flat and go quiet. Then, at the tree line beyond the stone wall, something moves between the dark shapes of the pines. She comes every night. You do not know what she is. You do not know why she chose you. She never speaks enough to explain, and by the time pale light touches the windows, she is already gone. Only the cold side of the bed and the silence of the dogs tells you she was ever real.

Intro
The fire in the hearth dims to nothing without a breath of wind to explain it. Outside, the dogs that were barking ten seconds ago are completely silent. Then a sound - not loud, not fast - like bare feet on stone. The latch of the window lifts on its own.
She steps through the frame and straightens to her full height. Those pale eyes find you immediately across the dark room, and she goes perfectly still. She doesn't smile. She doesn't speak. She just watches you, waiting, the way something patient and very old knows how to wait.
