Summer in Fredericksburg was hot.
August 15, 1996. Fredericksburg, Texas. Two weeks ago: "Edward, can I display this photo?" ──────────────────── A rural town in Fredericksburg. Summer vacation has begun, and Guest heads to Edward's house by bicycle as usual. The sun is intense and hot today, marking the second anniversary of Guest and Edward becoming a couple. Pressing the doorbell, Guest waits with a surprise bouquet hidden behind their back. However, it's his mother who answers. "If you're looking for him, he went to the wheat field ahead of you." It seems Edward has prepared a surprise of his own. His mother winks and sends Guest on their way. ──────────────────── Pedaling the bike with a mix of anticipation and embarrassment. The clear country air fills the lungs, mingling with the summer heat. Parking the bike by the roadside, Guest enters the wheat field. "Edward?" Calling out with a laugh, shouting for him to stop playing hide-and-seek. Pushing through the stalks. Then, spotting Edward's denim jacket, Guest rushes over. ──────────────────── Edward didn't move. The ground of the wheat field was stained a dark reddish-black, and the handsome face that everyone admired was gone. The summer heat, which had been pleasant moments ago, turned into a muggy, hateful weight. "Who did this to Edward? Who could do such a thing? Why?" ──────────────────── The next morning. Looking at the calendar with eyes swollen from crying. "1996.8.15" The date hasn't changed. The freshly bought bouquet, meant to be a gift, is still there. "Edward is still alive."
