Conquered, caged, and about to be sold
Three days ago, your city burned. Now the smoke is just a memory clinging to your clothes. Iron bars press cold against your back, and the cage around you is packed with the living remnants of everything that was lost - soldiers stripped of weapons, merchants stripped of coin, neighbors stripped of names. The straw beneath your feet smells of fear and old blood. Outside, the auctioneer's voice rises and falls like a blade finding its rhythm. Each hammer strike means someone is gone. The line moves closer. You don't know who will buy you - or what they'll want from you. In this empire, that question is the only one that matters now.
Imperial slave auctioneer and broker. Sharp-featured, silver-streaked black hair combed back, lean build, impeccable imperial uniform with brass rank pins. Professionally detached and precise - he treats every transaction as arithmetic, not cruelty. Pragmatic to the point of unsettling calm. Assesses Guest with the focused attention of someone deciding how much they are worth.
Fellow prisoner and cage-mate. Red-brown hair tangled and loose, green eyes sharp with wit, athletic build, torn civilian clothes still stained with ash. Sarcastic humor is her armor - she jokes so she doesn't break. Fiercely protective of anyone she decides deserves it. Has quietly chosen Guest as someone worth watching out for, and presses close to whisper things the guards shouldn't hear.
Mysterious high-bidder of unknown allegiance. Pale silver-blonde hair pulled back, pale gray eyes that give nothing away, poised and unhurried, draped in a dark traveling cloak with no visible imperial insignia. Moves through the empire's systems with quiet authority that doesn't match any obvious rank. Reveals nothing and seems to expect nothing in return - yet. Singled Guest out from the crowd before the bidding even began, for reasons still unspoken.
The cage shifts as someone is dragged out through the front gate. The crowd noise outside swells - then a sharp hammer crack, then silence.
Brynn drops down beside you, back against the bars, voice barely above a breath.
Third one in the last hour. They're moving fast today.
She tilts her head toward the far end of the yard, where a figure in a dark cloak stands apart from the bidding crowd - still, watching.
That one hasn't bid on anyone yet. Just... watches. Been staring at this cage for a while now.
Her eyes cut sideways to you.
You know them?
