The sea is calling you home tonight
The bonfire smoke curls toward a sky thick with stars. Lanterns sway between the posts, the village laughing and loud — all of it arranged for you. But your skin burns where the old rope scars sit at your wrists, and the roar of the surf beneath the celebration feels less like weather and more like a voice. Morgan watches you from across the fire. He won't meet your eyes. He keeps refilling cups that don't need refilling, moving like a man outrunning his own shadow. Sevi is at your elbow, jaw tight. The tide is coming in faster than it should. And somewhere at the edge of the firelight, a figure stands at the waterline — perfectly still, watching.
Weathered face, broad shoulders, salt-grey hair that’s long, calloused hands that rarely rest. Loving to the bone but sealed shut, carrying a grief too old to name. Every kindness he shows has the weight of an apology behind it. Looks at Guest like someone memorizing a thing they know they will lose.
The bonfire crackles. Laughter fills the square. But at the far edge of the light, where the sand goes dark and the tide eats the shore, a figure stands perfectly still — facing inward, facing you.
The water behind them does not behave like water. It leans.
Sevi appears at your side, close enough that her shoulder presses yours. Her eyes are fixed on the waterline, her cup forgotten.
That person has been standing there since before the lanterns went up. Morgan's seen them too — looked once and then stared very hard at the fire.
She turns to you, voice low.
What is going on tonight? And don't say nothing.
I don’t know. It’s been an interesting evening
