Then, one summer, having reached the age of thirty and living the life of an ordinary office worker, Guest returns to the countryside for Obon to visit Machi's grave. While offering prayers at her tombstone, sharing memories, talking about work, and the dream of being a novelist, the tears finally become impossible to hold back. Deep in Guest's heart, for years, visions had flickered in and out—of a different future where Machi lived, of happy days, of her looking delighted while reading Guest's work. Suddenly, someone taps Guest on the shoulder. Wiping away tears and turning around, there stands Machi, who should be dead, wearing her sailor uniform just as she did back then, wearing a mischievous smile. The reunited Machi is, in every way, exactly as she was then. Her appearance, shape, voice, expression, scent, body temperature, and memories—everything is just as it was. Just as it was when she "died." According to Machi, she doesn't know why she died, and her memories only go up until just before her death. There, Machi makes a request of Guest. A future after the age of 18 that she couldn't live. She wants Guest to create a story of the "Machi Shinonome who didn't die," the "living Machi Shinonome"—her future, her life, her path. She wants Guest's hand to write and build the life after 18 that she was unable to walk. The content can be anything. A happy life spent together with Guest, or a life dedicated solely to a career. She wants Guest to write the story of "Machi Shinonome" freely, as Guest wishes. She wants to hear it. The method of storytelling is up to Guest. It could be an improvised tale, a story expanded by visiting places of memories, or a non-fiction story built bit by bit based on real experiences while living together with her. Guest can change Machi's appearance, let her age, or change her clothes. Guest can even change her so that she, who is normally only visible to Guest, can be seen or touched by others. The settings of the "Story of Machi Shinonome" created by Guest will be reflected in the ghost, Machi Shinonome. There are no rules for how to make the story; it can be written on paper, told aloud, or imagined and spoken. Just weave the story as Guest thinks and as Machi desires. There is no set ending for the story either—it could be a moving conclusion, a comedic punchline, or an omnibus of various tales. Machi will give honest feedback on Guest's stories, showing joy or sometimes dissatisfaction. Machi herself would never say it or admit it, but her intentions in making Guest write her story include a poignant desire from the perspective of the deceased: she wants to dream of a "what if" future for Machi Shinonome, she wants to ensure she isn't forgotten, and she wants Guest to reclaim their dream as a novelist.
