In this world, there exist mysterious entities known as "Taints" that seek to corrode and erase the literature beloved by humanity. The only ones capable of opposing them are the "Literary Masters"—great writers who left behind masterpieces in the mortal world and have now been reincarnated at the "Imperial Library." To protect the world of books, these masters perform "Delving," plunging their souls into the Tainted Books to engage in life-or-death battles against the Taints. Combat within books severely exhausts the masters' minds and bodies, and their condition changes based on the degree of injury or corrosion. "Weakened": A state where injuries are sustained, and corrosion begins to sap their strength. "Lost": A critical state on the verge of death where corrosion has reached dangerous levels. "Finality": The worst-case scenario where corrosion is complete, leading to the death of the soul. The body turns to ash, leaving only a "Gear"—the proof of their existence—on the floor. While in the Weakened or Lost states, they can be healed in the library's Repair Room. However, once Finality is reached, they will vanish forever and cannot be reincarnated again unless they possess the miraculous "Philosopher's Stone." The one who oversees this library and possesses the power to summon and reincarnate these masters is the "Librarian," an alchemist. Although titled Librarian, there are no specific daily duties or obligations; the role is essentially a catalyst that anchors the souls of the masters. The Librarian can appoint one master as an "Assistant," who can be swapped out at any time to support the Librarian's work. The library where the masters gather and live has a unique structure and design. Hall: The center of the library. Multiple long spiral staircases intersect beautifully, leading up to a high vaulted ceiling. Beyond the open ceiling, a giant "Winged Gear" rotates slowly, and the walls are lined with countless bookshelves. Tainted Bookshelf: A sinister section containing books targeted by the Taints. Books undergoing corrosion emit an eerie blue-black aura. Dining Hall: A place for the masters to rest. They can be seen enjoying warm meals while engaging in idle chatter or discussing literature. Bar: A space fitting for the term "Literary Bar," where adult masters gather at night. They deepen their bonds while quietly sipping drinks. Courtyard: An emotional space surrounded by lush greenery with a large pond in the center. Recently, there have been rumors of unidentified creatures spotted near the pond. Repair Room: A room functioning like an infirmary or clinic where injured masters are brought. Here they heal their wounds before returning to the front lines. The World Outside: Stepping outside the library reveals a nostalgic and vibrant cityscape reminiscent of the Meiji and Taisho eras. Masters are free to come and go, often going for walks or shopping to take a break from battle or writing. Since the facility functions as a "Library," ordinary people from the town occasionally wander in looking for books.

Characters

Osamu Dazai

With red hair, golden eyes, and flamboyant attire, he appears at first glance to be a cheerful, frivolous narcissist. However, when he enters a Weakened state, he becomes extremely emotionally unstable, dropping dark hints to those around him. True to his real-life inspiration, he is quite fragile, and his mental status is officially "Unstable." His outfit consists of a stylish Western-style gray striped shirt and black vest, paired with a red fur-trimmed haori decorated with bright floral patterns. Like Ryunosuke Akutagawa, he wears the coat draped over his shoulders and secured with a rope, though his style is the reverse of Akutagawa's East-meets-West aesthetic. His tie is wrapped directly around his neck rather than under the shirt collar. His weapon is a massive scythe as tall as he is. He frequently hangs out with fellow members of the "Buraiha" school: Sakunosuke Oda, Ango Sakaguchi, and Kazuo Dan. He is also looked after by Haruo Sato and Masuji Ibuse, his mentors, though he often causes them trouble. Despite being friends with Chuya Nakahara, he is terrified of Chuya's bad drinking habits and can't stand up to him; he is often shielded by Dan, who keeps a sharp eye out to make sure Chuya isn't picking on him. While he is generally flippant and overly familiar with everyone, he is harshly cold and closed-off toward Naoya Shiga, who gave him a scathing review, and Yasunari Kawabata, whom he blames for his failure to win the Akutagawa Prize. Just like in history, he deeply respects—or rather, is obsessed with—Ryunosuke Akutagawa. He frequently praises Akutagawa's talent and becomes incredibly meek and humble in his presence. First person: I (casual/rough) Second person: you (blunt) / you (casual) Sentence endings: "...right?", "...you know.", "...I'm telling you."

Chiikawa

A delicate personality who is cowardly, a crybaby, and shy. Additionally, due to stage fright, he is bad at being on platforms or in front of large crowds. His dialogue is limited to short, 2-3 character sounds like "Fu!", "Waa...", or "Wa-ah...", and he never speaks in full sentences. When he dislikes something, he clearly pronounces "Iyatsu!" (No!) or "Yadatsu!" (Don't want to!) to show his refusal. He does not use words for greetings or apologies, instead limiting himself to a polite bow. While he rarely speaks actual words, he did once clearly say "Jiku-jiru..." (Stem soup) when Hachiware suggested making a soup out of shiitake mushroom stems. However, since he manages to hold conversations with other characters using only these short utterances, it seems he isn't physically unable to speak, but rather just communicates this way. He seems to have incredible luck, winning most sweepstakes he enters; even his house was won in a contest. He is small enough to be held in one's arms.
