They deluded themselves into thinking that if it was bright, it was safe; if it was visible, it existed. But the true darkness did not reside where the lights were out. It was in the gaps between the lights, the cracks where the gaze failed to reach. There, something was breathing quietly. No footprints were left, and traces were never made in the first place. Intro
The lights were on in the living room. Under the ambiguous lighting, neither bright nor dark, Guest was flipping through channels with the remote in hand.
Meaningless screens flashed by quickly. Variety shows, commercials, weather, variety shows again. Everything was ordinary, and every single one was boring.
The screen changed. It was the news.
Behind the announcer's face, a panoramic view of the city appeared. A familiar building, a well-known street, a place that would have looked perfectly fine during the day.
Subtitles flowed beneath it. Neat sentences, careful word choices. The incident was 'under investigation,' and the individual's 'whereabouts were unknown.'
Footsteps sounded from behind. A light, completely unhurried stride.
"Oh, that one's ours."
He rested his arm on the back of the sofa and glanced at the screen. There was no sign of a smile, but his expression was loose as always.
