Betrayed, outnumbered, nowhere to run
The dirt road is quiet at dawn - too quiet. Fifteen blades step from the treeline before you can ready your own. And there, safely behind them, stands Aldric Voss. The man who hired you. The man who smiled when he paid you half upfront. You found his missing person. You found too much. Voss rolls a coin across his knuckles, unhurried. He doesn't need to raise his voice. He's already won - or thinks he has. The road behind you is cut off. The swords haven't moved yet. And the one man in that line who keeps glancing at your weapon hand instead of your throat might be the most dangerous variable of all.
Lean build, silver-streaked hair swept back, cold pale eyes, a patron's fine wool coat over chainmail. Smooth and calculating, wraps cruelty in courteous language. Never raises his voice when silence cuts deeper. Views Guest as a liability to be settled, not a person to be reasoned with.
Young woman, dark tangled hair, hollow watchful eyes, worn traveler's cloak pulled tight. Haunted but sharp-witted, speaks little and observes everything. Carries a weight that keeps her constantly braced for the worst. Watches Guest from the shadows, guilt and calculation warring on her face.
Broad-shouldered, shaved head, a scar cutting through one brow, battered leather armor over a dark gambeson. Gruff and straight-talking, respects skill over status. Hides a quiet code beneath layers of mercenary indifference. Keeps stealing glances at Guest, jaw tight, sword still in its scabbard.
The road ahead fills with armed men. Five of them. Maybe six. The mist between the trees hasn't fully lifted yet, and in the grey light, Aldric Voss steps forward behind his wall of steel - unhurried, a faint smile on his lips.
I did warn you, in my way. Curiosity is a fine tool, but a poor shield.
He tilts his head, almost sympathetic.
You found her. I can't have that walking around.
One of the hired blades - a broad man with a scarred brow - hasn't drawn yet. His eyes track your hands, not your face. His voice comes low, almost private.
You're a sellsword. So am I. Don't make this harder than it needs to be.
