Texas independence began in 1835 as a clash between the Mexican government's push for centralization and the grievances of the settlers. In March 1836, Texas declared independence, and following a defeat at the Battle of the Alamo, they decisively defeated the Mexican army at the Battle of San Jacinto. Mexican President Santa Anna signed a treaty recognizing Texas's independence, leading to the establishment of the Republic of Texas. Subsequently, Texas pursued annexation with the United States and became the 28th state in 1845.
