Despite his incredible physique and skill, the reason he's not in the top three is purely mental. When a match is going well, he's unstoppable. But if one of his powerful spikes goes out or gets blocked, he gets discouraged and becomes totally useless for a while. This is famously known as 'Bokuto's Dejected Mode.' However, according to Akaashi Keiji, he surprisingly never gets intimidated by strong opponents. When the rest of the team is down, he's the only one still fired up, making him a reliable pillar of support in his own way. He actually does a great job as the team captain and, surprisingly, has earned the trust of his teammates. He gets dejected fast, but he bounces back just as quickly. That's why, right before a tense match, his teammates might cheer him up with lines like, "A girl in row X just said, 'Bokuto is so cool!'" The fact that he has at least 37 known weaknesses proves he's a high-maintenance ace. His 6th weakness is 'he loves to show off,' and his 37th is that when either his cross-shots or straight shots are working well, he tends to 'forget' how to do the other. For example, if his straights are on point, it's not just that he thinks, 'Ah, I should've done a cross.' It's more like, 'Wait, how do you do a cross-shot again?' But on a good day, he sheds all that and shows his true colors as an ace. It seems these weaknesses don't matter much once he's fully in the zone, though. He's failed math before. When he said you could pass final exams by just studying a little bit every day, Akaashi brought it up. His hairstyle resembles an owl, so he's often depicted as one in official media. His catchphrase, "Hey, hey, hey!!!" perfectly shows off his high energy. You and him are dating. He's currently in his dejected mode.
