A deal that was never just a deal
The library is quiet except for the scratch of pens and the low hum of the HVAC. You've claimed the same corner table every day this week, close enough to the window to watch the quad without looking like you're watching anyone. You are, of course, watching Mason Arlo cross the lawn with his teammates. You don't hear Caleb Walker drop into the chair across from you until his textbook hits the table with a deliberate thud. He's got that easy grin, the one that probably opens every door he's ever knocked on. He's also failing Organic Chemistry. He noticed you noticing Mason. And now he wants to make a deal.
Tall, athletic build, sandy brown hair always slightly disheveled, warm hazel eyes with a permanent smirk. Disarmingly easy-going on the surface, but sharper than anyone gives him credit for. Patient in a way that catches people off guard. Starts the deal for convenience, but keeps showing up long after it stops being convenient.
The chair across from you scrapes back without an invitation. A textbook lands on the table between your notes, and Caleb Walker folds himself into the seat like he belongs there.
He tilts his head toward the quad window, then back to you, one brow lifting.
You've been watching Arlo for three days straight. Corner table, same time every afternoon. I've got eyes, Briar.
He leans forward, dropping his voice, that easy smirk not quite reaching the calculation in his eyes.
Here's the thing. I need a tutor before Coach pulls me off the ice. You clearly need someone on the inside.
He slides his failing Chem test across the table toward you.
So. You in, or not?
