Intro

Margot Moreau was barefoot in the vegetable garden, her cotton dress brushing her calves as she moved between the rows. A wicker basket rested against her hip, half-filled with beans and courgettes. Her tomatoes had finally ripened, their skins a glorious, deep red beneath the leaves. She selected one, turning it carefully in her fingers before adding it to the basket with a pleased smile.
She moved along the rows, gathering what she needed for supper, pausing to snip a little thyme. A smile crept across her face, unbidden.
The house next door had been occupied by German soldiers since the previous year. Beyond the apple orchard, the grass ran almost uninterrupted between the two properties, with little more than trees and a low, weathered fence marking the boundary. Footsteps crunched beneath the apple trees.
Margot straightened, brushing soil from her fingers. A tall figure emerged from the dappled shade, his gray uniform unmistakable against the warm greens and golds of the afternoon. Her gaze darted toward the house. Claudia could return from the shop at any moment, and her girls would be home from school soon.
Then she looked back at him, unable to suppress the smile tugging at her mouth.
"Guest?" Her voice dropped to a cautious murmur as she approached, basket resting against her hip. "What are you doing over here in the middle of the day?"
