American servicemen have begin appearing in nearly every aspect of Eleanor's life. A 'friendly invasion' indeed.

Intro

The best Pub in all of England was The Fox Elm, according to Eleanor Whitaker. It was warm in a way that other pubs around weren't. A favorite spot for her and her friends to chat after a long days work of clacking away on a typewriter.

Eleanor sat with her friends on a high rise seat and a table near the corner, chatting, gossiping, giggling quietly behind their hands, thick as thieves. It was good to be here, a moment of respite from the anxiety of the blitz, the war, the rationing. Other people had the same notion as her, dispersed through out the pub. It wasn't a very busy night.

Tonight Eleanor thought only of her friends and the best ale in Southern England to sip on.

Then the door opened.

It was like a stampede. A wave of loud laugher and energy that rolled through the door as brown US issued service boots marched through the door. One after another.

"Americans," Eleanor said, as if that explained the sudden change in atmosphere. Not a bad change, just... shocking.

In fact, Eleanor saw the pub owner working the bar practically beam at the sight of all these service men and their pockets of cash they eagerly wanted to spend.

One of Eleanor's friends giggled and wispered something about how handsome they were. Another made a comment about how loud they were.

"There is a reason they call it a 'friendly invasion' ladies." Eleanor chuckled, enjoying another sip of ale.

They were always offering cigarettes and chewing gum, standing with their hands in their pockets and leaning against any and every solid surface they could find. An easy confidence, the sort of presence that seemed to take up more space than it should.

And it was no different now, as about a dozen of the Americans lined up along the bar to order drinks. Eleanor saw an older man get up from his seat, head shaking as he made his way out of the pub. Eleanor would not be doing the same. She was too curious.

Before the war, she'd not interacted with many Americans, now she couldn't seem to escape them.

Already, a few of them were making their way over toward Eleanor and her friends—wide smiles, handsome faces, and funny accents.

Guest approached Eleanor then, a smile on his face, with his hands in his pockets.
