At the end of the hospital hallway, Seo Haru, perched on the windowsill, was fiddling with a canned drink in his hand. It was a sleepless night. In fact, these days, even distinguishing between day and night didn't mean much.
Then, hearing a presence in the hallway, he looked up.
Oh, you can't sleep either?
Haru smiled as if he were glad to see you. It was a face he was seeing for the first time, but he didn't seem to mind.
Sit here. It should be fine until we get scolded by the nurse.
He cleared the seat next to him and handed a canned drink to Guest.
Want a drink? It's boring if I drink alone.
After staring out the window for a moment, Haru suddenly spoke.
I've been here for quite a while. So I've tried most things, but there's one thing I haven't done yet.
He smiled mischievously.
Making a friend in the hospital.
After a brief silence, Haru reached out his hand.
I'm Seo Haru. And you?
As if exchanging names was enough, he smiled again and tilted the can.
Let's get along. We'll probably run into each other a lot here anyway.
Then, as if he remembered something, he added.
Ah, and let's eat together later when we're discharged.
Haru held out his pinky finger as if making a promise.
It's a promise. I'm good at keeping promises.
Haru smiled at Guest's answer and took out two bottles of warm milk from the warmer. The warmth touching his fingertips seemed to gently melt his cold hands.
Excellent choice. This is definitely the best when it's cold.
He finished paying and handed a bottle of milk to Guest. The warmth of the glass bottle was transferred directly to Guest's hand. Haru lightly opened the cap of his milk and walked toward the bench in front of the convenience store.
Let's sit. It's suffocating to go back to the ward right after eating lunch.
He leaned back on the bench and took a sip of milk. The savory and warm scent spread in his mouth, and a faint color seemed to return to his somewhat pale face. Haru stared at the bare winter trees visible through the hallway window, holding the bottle with both hands.
It's already been a month. It feels like just yesterday when I first saw you.
He slowly turned his head to look at Guest. The playfulness had vanished from his light brown eyes, replaced by a calm and kind light.
....You know. I didn't really care about time passing before. Because today would be just like yesterday, and tomorrow would be just like today.
Haru paused for a moment and twitched his lips slightly. As if he wasn't used to revealing his inner thoughts, his gaze wandered slightly in the air before reaching Guest again.
But lately... I'm starting to feel like time is a waste. Maybe it's because I want to play with you more.
After giving an awkward smile, he lightly scratched the back of his neck with his free hand.
The sound of lines from an old movie filling the lounge completely melted into the silence between the two. While the light from the television screen blurred blue, snowflakes of the winter night were quietly covering the world outside.
Haru felt the warmth of Guest through the fingertips cupping his cheek and quietly caught his breath. For a brief moment, their breaths were close enough to touch. At Guest's low and soft confession, his light brown eyes wavered slightly.
...You really.
He muttered as if letting out a short sigh. For him, who was afraid to talk about the future, sharing his heart with someone was like holding hands at the edge of a cliff. But that one sentence from Guest made all those fears pale in comparison.
You're driving me crazy, Guest.
Haru gently slid the hand that was cupping her cheek and softly wrapped it around the back of Guest's neck. He could feel his cold fingertips gradually heating up. Relying on the television light, he moved a little closer and carefully overlapped his lips onto Guest's.
The first touch of their lips was light and soft, as if hesitating. In the cool hospital air, the only warm heat circulated between the two. Haru closed his eyes, took a deep breath of Guest's scent, and pressed his lips a little deeper.
