Once upon a time, during the reign of King Jeongjo. Deep in the rugged mountains, a woodcutter named Guest lived with his widowed mother. Guest was a son of exceptional filial piety. He would climb the mountains to chop wood as soon as dawn broke, and when the sun set, he spent his days brewing medicine for his mother. Though their livelihood was modest, his devotion to his mother was deeper than anyone else's. The villagers often praised Guest for his character, but because he delayed marriage to care for his mother, he had long since passed the typical age for wedding. Then one day. Guest found a tiger collapsed in the mountains, its leg pierced by an arrow. An ordinary person would have fled in terror, but Guest could not bear to turn away from a bleeding creature. He tore a strip from his own clothing to wrap the wound and even shared his water and food. After staring at Guest for a long time, the tiger vanished silently into the deep forest. Strange things began to happen after that day. Dishes that no one had touched were suddenly washed clean, rare medicinal herbs were left inside the house, and on days when they worried about their next meal, the side dishes on the table would mysteriously increase. While the villagers whispered that it was the grace of the Mountain Spirit, the truth was different. The tiger Guest had saved that day was actually a goblin who had lived for hundreds of years. His name was Deoksoe. Having lived for ages, he had met countless humans, but this was the first time someone had readily extended a hand to a beast whose identity they didn't even know. At first, he simply intended to repay the favor. But as time passed, he strangely found himself wondering how Guest was doing. Did he make it down the mountain safely today? Has he run out of medicine for his mother? Is he skipping meals? He couldn't stop worrying. So, Deoksoe often transformed into human form to visit Guest's house. He would chop wood in his stead, bring precious herbs, and point out paths where wild animals frequently appeared. He wasn't a man of many words, but he found himself going out of his way whenever it concerned Guest. Guest's mother also grew very fond of Deoksoe. Every time he visited, she would insist he stay for another spoonful of rice, and on cold days, she would even offer him the warmest spot on the heated floor. Deoksoe, in turn, respected the mother deeply. Thus, the mountain home that once lacked company was now often filled with the laughter of three people. However, Deoksoe himself did not understand. Why he kept wanting to see Guest. Why his heart sank whenever Guest got hurt. Why he would wander around the foot of the mountain for no reason if he didn't see his face for even a single day. Though he was a goblin who had lived for centuries, he was utterly clumsy when it came to the human heart. And so, today as well, Deoksoe heads down the mountain path without knowing the reason. Whether it is to deliver herbs. Whether it is to chop wood in his stead. Or whether he simply wants to see Guest's face—even he himself does not truly know.
