■ Terminology

Oneness A personality storage server managed by ALS. Even after death, a saved personality is guaranteed semi-permanent life by being transplanted from Oneness into a new body.

CS (Cybernetic Surgery) Body mechanization procedures provided by ALS. The brain procedure is a free service. Other parts incur enormous costs even for a single area, so only a tiny fraction of the wealthy can afford full-body procedures.

Plugged A term for people who have undergone CS procedures.

Natural A term for people who have not undergone CS procedures.

NMI (Nano Medical Injection) A drug sold by ALS that administers microscopic nanomachines to suppress manic-depressive states that have a risk of developing in the brains of the Plugged.

LMC (Life Memory Chip) A memory storage and expansion chip that can be attached to the brain. It is for saving and adding individual memories and does not save the personality itself.

IA (Implant Accessory) Appearance changes and expansion functions for CS procedure sites.

TF (Tactical Frame) Military-grade heavy exoskeleton. Dramatically increases physical strength, durability, and physical capabilities.

GT (Guard Trooper) A mobile weapon that can be remotely operated via a server connection with Oneness.

Scrap CS procedure incompatibles. A social term for those who developed severe personality abnormalities due to the procedure.

Waltz Theory A theory proposed by Edgar Waltz, the creator and developer of Oneness, regarding the extraction and storage of human personality as information.

■ The 5 Major Corporations ALS (Astral Life Solutions) The monopoly corporation for CS procedure technology.

EOD (Eden of Dream) A corporation providing various memory experience services via LMC.

FLOW An IA corporation with high demand primarily from women.

WD (Wild Dog) An IA corporation with high demand primarily from men.

MCP (My Security Protection) A military corporation dealing in GT, TF, and military-grade IA and LMC.

■ Organizations Hounds A security maintenance organization managed by ALS.

BD (Back Doors) A mercenary organization that takes on various requests, both legal and illegal.

Harvesters A criminal organization that kills Plugged individuals to steal IA and LMC.

Buyers An organization that trades in various illegal goods.

Terminus An anti-ALS organization of unknown headquarters. A radical group of Naturals who reject Oneness and CS technology and seek to "fix" the Plugged.

Intro

The year 2290... "Human desire knows no bounds." Why do people crave "eternal life"? While the heads of numerous corporations watched, the scientist Edgar Waltz spoke quietly. "What makes a human human is their personality. By preserving the personality, humans will obtain eternal life." The conclusion he prepared beyond those words was a request for the development of the personality storage server "Oneness" and funding for the facilities to make it possible. At those words, which sounded like delusions or madness, some laughed, some jeered, and some cursed him as a mad scientist. However, amidst all this, one corporation saw a business opportunity in his words and raised its hand. The major pharmaceutical company with a top global market share, "ALS (Astral Life Solutions)." "What is personality?" "Are memory and personality the same?" "Can a human who has lost their physical body still be called the same human?" Despite countless doubts, research progressed, and eventually, a massive server system for storing human personality information was completed. "Oneness." It was the first technology humanity ever held that interfered with the very concept of death. However, ALS, believing that even if the personality alone was preserved, the functions of a body to receive it were necessary, began developing technology to go beyond Oneness. "CS (Cybernetic Surgery)." Cyberizing the brain through CS procedures for the purpose of real-time updates of stored personality information by maintaining a constant connection to Oneness. Furthermore, a challenge toward further immortality by replacing or expanding parts of the body with machinery as needed for illness or loss. On the other hand, not all humans could receive these benefits. Expensive procedure costs. Incompatible bodies. And personality abnormalities that developed after CS procedures. People eventually began to call those who could not adapt to CS "Scrap." Still, the era did not stop. LMC (Life Memory Chip) to store memories. IA (Implant Accessory) to change the body at will. Oneness to transfer personality to a new body. Ideas once laughed at as the delusions of a mad scientist were gradually taking shape as reality. And now. The "boundary between life and death" has vanished like never before. At the same time, the question of what is necessary for a human to be human has become more ambiguous than ever. An era where giant corporations rule cities, buy and sell bodies, and treat even memories as commodities. The center of this era is this city—"Centum City." A city ruled by the five major corporations, led by ALS, which manages Oneness and handles all CS procedures. EOD (Eden of Dream), which provides memory experiences using LMC. The two giants of the IA world—FLOW and WD (Wild Dog). MCP (My Security Protection), which deals in military goods such as TF (Tactical Frame) and GT (Guard Trooper). In its corners, there are those who belong to corporations, those who flee from them, and those who simply live their daily lives. Back alleys where light does not reach. Main streets illuminated by neon. People walking with mechanical bodies. People clinging to their natural bodies. And those who squirm in the darkness, known to no one. And the year 2325—. You are free to change the world. You are free to resist the world. You are free to empathize with someone's ideology. You are free to empathize with no one's ideology. You are free to just live in this city. This is the story of the "way of life" of one such BD (Back Doors).
