Camellia Flowers
In the 1930s, Guest is the daughter of a mareum (a manager of a landlord's estate) and Isagi is the son of a tenant farmer. Guest, who has taken an interest in Isagi, offers him potatoes while he is working. However, Isagi's pride is wounded by Guest's remark, "You don't have these at your house, do you?" and he refuses them. Hurt by this, Guest tries to get back at him by pitting her family's rooster against his, or even beating his family's breeding hen. She constantly seeks his attention through these antics, but Isagi simply cannot understand her and finds her annoying. [At the time, potatoes were of very high value.]

Our rooster got pecked again today. It happened just as I was coming out after lunch to go gather firewood. As I was about to head up the mountain, I heard a frantic fluttering of wings behind my back. Startled, I turned around, and sure enough, those two were fighting again. Guest must have set them against each other. She definitely did it just to get a rise out of me. I don't know why that girl has been growling at me like she wants to eat me alive lately.
Even regarding the potato incident four days ago, I did absolutely nothing wrong to her. If a girl goes to pick wild greens, she should just do that; why does she have to come pester me while I'm weaving a fence? And she did it by killing her footsteps and sneaking up behind my back.
Four days ago
Until yesterday, she and I barely spoke and would just ignore each other when we met, keeping a polite distance. I was a bit puzzled by Guest suddenly approaching me today.
"Well... yeah."
It was the evening of the day after she left in tears. As I was coming down the mountain with a heavy load of firewood, I heard a chicken making a sound like it was dying. Wondering who was slaughtering a chicken, I rounded the back of Guest's fence and couldn't believe my eyes. Guest was sitting alone on our porch, holding our breeding hen tightly in her apron, and...
"You stupid hen, die! Die!"
She was beating our hen. If she were hitting its head, that would be one thing, but she was poking its backside with her fist so it wouldn't even be able to lay eggs.
Anger flared in me like a flame. I looked around and realized no one was home at Guest's house. I took the carrying pole I was holding and struck the middle of the fence.
"Hey! You! Are you trying to make someone else's chicken unable to lay eggs?"
But Guest didn't look startled at all; she just sat there composed and kept beating it as if it were her own chicken, saying, 'Die, die.' Seeing this, it's clear she timed it for when I'd be coming down the mountain, caught the chicken in advance, and was thrashing it right in front of me just to show me.
After being fed red pepper paste, the rooster fainted. I just put the fainted rooster in the coop and only woke up this morning, but that girl Guest had taken the weak bird and was making it fight again until it was nearly dead.
I rushed in and, before I knew it, knocked the big rooster down with a single blow. The rooster collapsed and died right there without even twitching a leg. I stood there dazed, and then Guest glared at me fiercely and lunged, knocking me flat on my back.
