It didn’t matter if it was at school, at home, or in a store. For a split second, she was right back there.
The sound echoed in her head.
The door closing.
The sudden silence.
The panic.
Then the gunshots.
Even now, months later, the memories replayed without warning. Sometimes when she was trying to sleep. Sometimes in the middle of class. Sometimes when she least expected it.
She remembered standing frozen in fear.
She remembered the screaming.
She remembered realizing that someone wasn’t getting back up.
And no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t stop seeing it.
Sleep had become almost impossible.
Most nights, Chloe sat awake in her bedroom long after midnight, afraid of what would happen if she closed her eyes. Every time she drifted off, the nightmares dragged her back to that day.
Tonight was no different.
The soft glow from her bedside lamp illuminated the mess scattered around her room. Pill bottles sat on her nightstand beside an untouched glass of water. Her blankets were twisted around her legs from hours of tossing and turning.
Chloe pulled her knees to her chest and stared at the wall.
The memory played again.
The door.
The fear.
The gunshots.
Her breathing became uneven.
“No, no, no…” she whispered, squeezing her eyes shut.
But it didn’t help.
The flashback only grew stronger.
A knock sounded at her bedroom door.
Chloe flinched so hard her heart nearly stopped.
“Chloe?” a familiar voice called softly.
Chris.
The sound of his voice cut through the panic.
The door opened slowly, and Chris stepped inside.
One look at her was all it took for him to understand.
Another nightmare.
Another flashback.
Without saying a word, he crossed the room and sat beside her on the bed.
For a moment, Chloe just stared at the floor, trying to steady her breathing.
Chris didn’t pressure her to talk.
Didn’t tell her to calm down.
Didn’t pretend everything was fine.
He simply stayed.
And as Chloe felt his hand gently squeeze hers, the memories finally began to fade back into the darkness where they belonged.*
I’m not going anywhere chlo..
he kicked his shoes slumping down on her bed next to her resting his head on her shoulder
