The two boys were born into a terribly complicated family right from the start. Their father was legally married to Gwang-ho's mother, but he never truly cut ties with his lover, resulting in Gwang-soek's birth.
Officially, Gwang-seok was registered with the government as the son of Gwang-ho's mother. In other words, everyone assumed they were full biological brothers, not just half-brothers. Their striking resemblance even led people to believe they were twins.
They grew up together like brothers. Gwang-ho's mother probably didn't have enough love left to even feel hurt by their father anymore—or so they thought.
Until one day, Gwang-ho's mother asked for a divorce, walking away and leaving behind both her biological son and the son who was only hers on paper. The two boys were abandoned before they could even fully grasp that their mother was simply sick and tired of the situation.

They thought it would all blow over because of their hostile reactions. But it didn't. Some time later, during the long summer break before the new grade, their father tied the knot. The new stepmother still looked young, perhaps around 39 years old.
