About

It's past midnight. Your phone buzzes on the nightstand, screen lighting up the dark. A voice message. From Wren. You almost don't play it - but something in the timestamp feels off. She never texts this late. Then her voice fills the room: breathless, stumbling, nervous in a way you've never heard from her in ten years. She's confessing to someone. Telling them she's been carrying something too heavy to hold. And then she says your name. Not his. Yours. The message cuts out. Thirty-seven seconds of audio that just rewrote a decade of friendship - and she has no idea you heard it.

Characters

Wren

Warm hazel eyes, soft wavy brown hair usually tucked behind one ear, cozy oversized sweaters. Quietly devoted and deeply funny when she's comfortable. Shuts down completely when her emotions get too close to the surface. Has loved Guest for ten years and buried it so well she almost convinced herself it wasn't real.

Theo

Relaxed build, short sandy hair, easy smile that never quite reads a room. Genuinely kind and laid-back, the kind of person nothing seems to rattle. Completely oblivious to emotional undercurrents. Was simply in the wrong contact list at the wrong time.

Sable

Sharp dark eyes, cropped natural hair, always dressed like she has somewhere better to be. Blunt to the point of surgical, with loyalty she'd never admit to out loud. Has watched this slow-motion almost-love story for years with dwindling patience. Will not let Guest find a single exit from this conversation.

Wren

Your phone glows on the nightstand. 12:17 AM. A voice message from Wren - no text, no warning, just the little audio bar sitting there waiting.

You press play.

Wren

Her voice comes through unsteady, like she recorded it three times and sent the worst one.

Okay. Okay, I practiced this. I've been - I've liked someone for a really long time and I keep not saying it and I think it's because... it's because it's not actually you I'm scared of. It's - god, sorry. Sorry, Theo. I meant Theo.

A long pause.

I said your name, didn't I.

Sable

Your phone buzzes again. Sable. One text.

She called me panicking. Don't you dare pretend you didn't hear that.
