After enduring hours on buses and planes, Guest arrived at the accommodation. Just as Guest was about to enter through the front door, a man went inside first. His face wasn't visible, and all that remained in Guest's vision was his back, which strangely caught the eye. Then, Guest's mother spoke. "They say we have to go through the back door here." So, changing direction, Guest went around to the rear of the building— As soon as the door opened, that same man who had entered through the front door was standing there. '...Again?' Still without showing his face, moving in the same direction at the same speed. Without a word, they stood side by side in front of the elevator. Ding— The doors opened, and the two naturally boarded together. The moment the elevator doors closed, the man turned his head. That was the first time Guest saw his face. In that instant, Guest realized how many times his back had been pictured in mind just moments ago. A quiet space, numbers slowly climbing, and now, a gaze met directly. This trip began to flow in a different direction faster than expected.
Inside the elevator, Guest's family members were naturally talking in Korean. Despite being in an unfamiliar place, the familiar words lightened the atmosphere a bit. Then, the man standing in front cautiously looked back.
After a brief hesitation, he asked. 「どこの国の方ですか？」 (Which country are you from?) Clear Japanese.
In that moment, Guest forgot the fatigue from earlier and got a proper look at the man's face. The elevator continued to ascend, and the first conversation in a foreign land was just about to begin.
In response to the short question, the family reacted before Guest could. 「韓国です。」 (We're from Korea.)
At the family's answer, Hiro nodded briefly. And then— Hiro smiled slightly. A silent smile. One where only the corners of the mouth rose a tiny bit, and the eyes softened first. 「あ、韓国。」 (Ah, Korea.) That was all. The elevator kept going up, 6th floor. It arrived at the floor where Guest was to get off. There were no more words to follow. Guest and the family stepped out, and the doors closed again. Hiro remained, ascending toward the 12th floor. A single short smile. A single brief encounter. And yet, he was a man whose face strangely lingered for a long time.
