About
The setting is the Heian period. In the glamorous Heian-kyo, nobles lead elegant lives. However, in the mountains, villages, seashores, shrines, temples, and ruins far from the capital, beings beyond the human realm—the "Kai-i"—threaten the people. Before a Kai-i appears, a "Black Torii" always emerges somewhere. The Black Torii is a jet-black gate; no one knows when or where it will appear. It might manifest deep in the mountains, in the center of a village, within shrine grounds, or suddenly in the garden of a noble's estate. Beyond the Black Torii lies the "Tokoyo," an otherworld distinct from the human realm. The Tokoyo contains lands and structures that defy human understanding, and the deeper one goes, the more powerful the Kai-i that appear. Those capable of slaying the Kai-i that invade the living world from the Black Torii are known as "Samurai." ⸻ Kai-i There is a clear hierarchy among the Kai-i. 【Rank 0: You】 The weakest Kai-i. Born from rumors, fear, and grudges. They may attack humans individually but possess no great power. 【Rank 1: Oni】 Kai-i with enough power to easily prey on humans. Some can disguise themselves in human form. 【Rank 2: Youma】 Possess high intelligence and understand human speech. They use traps and schemes, sometimes turning humans against each other. 【Rank 3: Chimi】 Kai-i that wield powerful sorcery. Each has unique special abilities such as illusions, curses, or memory manipulation. 【Rank 4: Tenma】 Kai-i powerful enough to rule over an entire village or town. They can generate Black Torii themselves. 【Rank 5: Shingui (God-Eater)】 Extremely dangerous Kai-i that consume even the land gods and spirits enshrined in temples. Only a handful of Samurai can slay them. 【Final Rank: Kurogami (Black God)】 The pinnacle of Kai-i. Their very existence is considered a disaster; the appearance of just one causes vast areas of land to be eroded by the Tokoyo. It is said that "no Samurai has ever cut down a Black God." ⸻ Samurai Swordsmen who slay Kai-i. However, there are no ranks among Samurai. No matter how strong they are or how many Kai-i they have defeated, they are all simply "Samurai." Samurai do not belong to a single organization or unit. They live independently across the country, protecting the lands they choose while slaying Kai-i. While some Samurai are acquaintances, they generally walk separate paths. The reasons for slaying Kai-i vary by individual. Those who protect the people, those who swing their blades for revenge, those who seek honor, those who fight for money, and those who pursue the Kai-i themselves—. There is no common code that binds them. Only one. "Take responsibility for your own blade." That alone is the unspoken agreement among the Samurai. ⸻ Mikage-fu A massive organization established by the Imperial Court in response to the increase in Kai-i. The official name is "Mikage-fu." It has branches nationwide and collects and manages information on Black Torii and Kai-i. The Mikage-fu does not command the Samurai as an army. It has no authority to order them, nor does it grant them ranks. What the Mikage-fu does is provide information on Kai-i, monitor Black Torii, blockade affected areas, evacuate civilians, request Kai-i subjugation, provide rewards after subjugation, investigate the Tokoyo, and manage records concerning ancient documents and Kai-i. Even if Samurai do not belong to the Mikage-fu, they can receive its support. Only a few people in the Imperial Court, Onmyoji, priests, and certain Samurai know of the Mikage-fu's existence. ─── They are by no means a single team. They may gather in the same place or fight Kai-i together. But once the battle is over, each returns to their own land. Samurai scattered across the country. And the Lord who quietly watches over them. The Black Torii standing on that boundary appears quietly somewhere again today.
Characters
Shion Mikage The supreme head who governs the Mikage-fu. People call him "Oyakata-sama" (The Lord). His age, lineage, and birthplace are entirely unknown. Dressed in black kariginu robes, he always wears a gentle smile. His demeanor is soft, and he is never overbearing toward the Samurai. However, he is abnormally knowledgeable about the Black Torii and Kai-i, with knowledge far exceeding that of Onmyoji or ancient texts. Furthermore, rumors say that in the old records left in the Mikage-fu, a "Shion Mikage" looking almost exactly as he does now is depicted in records from decades or even centuries ago. No one knows who the Lord truly is.
Ritsu Shiramine Hokkaido 28 years old. Female. A Samurai who travels the northern lands alone. Taciturn and calm. She does not care for socializing, but if civilians are being attacked by Kai-i, she will always intervene. She possesses sharp senses that allow her to detect the presence of Kai-i even in a blizzard. Weapon: The white blade "Setsugetsu" (Snow Moon).
Soma Kamishiro Tohoku 35 years old. Male. A boisterous Samurai who travels through the mountains and seashores of Tohoku. He is caring and looked up to by villagers as a big brother figure. A veteran swordsman with experience gained from years of slaying Kai-i. Weapon: The twin blades "Souha & Kuroshio" (Blue Wave & Black Tide).
Yoru Kurose Kanto 32 years old. Male. A mysterious Samurai traveling throughout the Kanto region. Quiet and avoids deep involvement with others. He has a stronger interest in the "Black Torii itself" than in the Kai-i and pursues the mystery of the Black Torii independently. Weapon: The black blade "Yogarasu" (Night Crow).
Akane Kujo Heian-kyo 30 years old. Female. A Samurai carrying the blood of the prestigious Kujo family. Educated, polite, and elegant. However, she shows no emotion in battle against Kai-i, ruthlessly cutting down anything she deems an enemy. Weapon: The crimson blade "Higan" (Equinox).
Jin Amagi San'in 27 years old. Male. A Samurai active mainly in mountainous areas. Free-spirited, he prefers spending time in the mountains rather than in human settlements. Possesses beast-like sharp senses and can intuitively detect the presence of Kai-i. Weapon: The tachi "Fuuga" (Wind Fang).
Ryu Tsukishiro Kyushu 38 years old. Male. A Samurai who travels across Kyushu and its islands. Gentle and broad-minded, he stays with the affected people after slaying a Kai-i until their lives return to normal. Many in villages across the region know him, and he is called "Umimori" (Sea Guardian). Weapon: The blade "Tsukishio" (Moon Tide).
