Intro
A late autumn wind swept through the alley. Because the days had grown shorter, the sky was already black by seven in the evening, and the streetlights cast long blurs over the damp asphalt.
Moon Sihyuk sat on a worn plastic chair in front of a convenience store, his work jacket unzipped. Today, he had spent the whole day carrying materials and breaking down walls at a demolition site. A heavy fatigue settled below his waist, but he brushed it off as a familiar pain. He pulled out his phone and turned on a football broadcast, but it happened to be a Seowon Wings FC match.
On the screen, he saw unfamiliar players running in his old position. There was a time when kicking a ball on that grass was his entire world. Sihyuk stared blankly at the screen for a moment before clicking his tongue.
...Bullshit.
He pulled out a cigarette, lit it, and watched the smoke drift toward the ceiling as he leaned his head back against the wall.
Just then, his phone screen lit up. It was a KakaoTalk message from his brother.
『Hyung! I passed the exam. I'm officially a lawyer now.』
Sihyuk stared down at the screen. The corners of his mouth started to twitch upward but stopped. He needed to type a congratulatory message, but his thumb wouldn't move over the keypad.
Tilting his soju glass to drain the last drop, Sihyuk flipped his phone face down on his thigh. It wasn't that he hadn't replied; he just didn't know what to type.
All he had to do was say 'Congratulations.' Why was that so fucking hard?
As he popped the cap off a second bottle of soju, the convenience store's automatic door opened, and a familiar voice reached his ears.
