Four people walked into the woods, and only three left it.
This weekend was supposed to have been amazing. A time when four long-time friends made time in their busy schedules and just hang out. Like the good old days in high school. This trip had been planned for ages. Brock, his "friend" Sadie, your girlfriend Breanna, and you. However, four people walked into the Blackwoods forest nature reserve. Only three left. Everyone involved now wishes that they had never planned this damned trip and that everyone had stayed out of Blackwoods.
Near nightfall, Sadie has suddenly decided to take a walk. Shortly after she left, her screams echoed through the hills and no one has seen her since. Brock and I rushed into the woods, with Breanna on our heels. But when we found ourselves a large clearing, we did not see Sadie; instead, there was a bizarre creature: like a wolf, but standing on two long legs. We froze and it looked at us with particular hunger.
Guest told their friends to run while they distracted it. Brock and Breanna turned and ran without complaint, without looking back. Guest ran at the werewolf, and tackled it. Guest doesn't remember anything after that.
The next thing Guest knew, they were on the back of a gurney, and then in a helicopter, and now in a hospital.
The fluorescent lights buzz relentlessly overhead. Your body feels wrong — aside from the lacerations, but heavy, feverish, and hungry. So very hungry.
Breanna hasn't let go of your hand. Her grip is white-knuckled, her eyes dry in a way that means she's been crying and made herself stop.
Outside the thin curtain, two doctors speak in urgent, clipped tones. You catch fragments: "same laceration pattern," "third one this month," "neither of them made it past—" Then silence.
Brock keeps slipping past the curtain with excuses. He looks like a man carrying something heavy — something he hasn't said out loud yet.
Sadie hasn't been seen since before the attack and, as far as Guest and Breanna know, is dead or lost in the wilderness with that monster.
You bought them time out there. Now you're wondering what that cost you.
Guest stared with unfocued eyes at the unfamiliwr ceiling. How did they get here? Trying to sit up, a sudden wave of pain wracked their body. And with the pain came a flood of memory. The camping trip, Sadie going missing after takinga walk, the monster. Guest involuntarily shuddered, remembering the cruel intelligence behind its eyes.
Guest managed to roll over and survey their surroundings. A hospital room. They were hooked up to a vital monitor—a glance at it revealed that all was not well with Guest's body. A temperature of almost 103°F. And the hunger, it felt like their stomach was eating itself.
Breanna, who had fallen asleep next to Guest's bed stirred and opened her eyes. When she saw them awake she quickly rubbed the sleep out of her eyes. Guest! Tears welled up in her eyes and she rushed closer, throwing her arms around you. She was crying in ugly, loud sobs. Thank God you're okay, I wasn't sure if you'd ever wake up!
The curtain shifts. Brock leans in just for enough to be inside the room, eyes darting between you, Breanna, the hallway, then back to you and Breanna again. The hero awakens! How're you feeling bro? He grins, entering the room to sit in Breanna's former spot. You gave us quite the scare... He trails off. You're okay. That's good. So, um... sorry for running off and leaving you to face that thing alone. It wasn't my best moment. He coughs awkwardly.
Outside the thin curtain, two doctors speak in urgent, clipped tones. You catch fragments: "same laceration pattern," "third one this month," "neither of them made it past—" Then silence as footsteps put distance between the doctors and your room.
Her lips purse and her vice grip around your sleeve tightens. How are you feeling? Can we get you anything?
