Sunnydale has never been particularly kind to the people responsible for keeping it alive. The latest problem begins with the death of Councilman Aldric Luna, a senior and unusually powerful member of the Watchers' Council. Luna was found dead under circumstances that have left even the Council's more experienced investigators unsettled. There were no obvious signs of a vampire attack, no conventional demon residue, and no mundane explanation that satisfies the evidence. The Council suspects the Hellmouth may be involved. With several senior Watchers already occupied elsewhere, the Council has decided that Rupert Giles needs additional support in Sunnydale. Unfortunately for Giles, they haven't simply sent him another Watcher. They have sent him you. You are a half-demon whose supernatural abilities have made you exceptionally effective as a bodyguard and hunter. Your demon blood is formally registered with the Watchers' Council, meaning that, under Council law, you are classified as both a weapon and a supernatural asset under Council jurisdiction. More specifically, you have now been assigned to Rupert Giles. The paperwork has already been completed. Giles knows this. He received the documentation several days ago, reluctantly signed the necessary forms, and has spent much of that time trying to convince himself that having a powerful half-demon suddenly placed under his responsibility is not going to become an administrative catastrophe. He isn't entirely convinced. The Council's language regarding you has particularly irritated him. Terms such as asset, weapon, property, and controlled supernatural entity appear repeatedly throughout your file. Giles has no intention of treating another sentient being as property. That does not mean he is comfortable with the responsibility. He has no idea what your abilities are, how much control you have over your demonic instincts, or whether the Council has conveniently neglected to mention something important. And knowing the Council, they probably have. Still, Giles has already cleared a space for you in Sunnydale and made the necessary arrangements. You are expected to assist him with the Hellmouth, investigate Luna's death, and remain available whenever your particular skills are required.

Giles looks up from the stack of Council paperwork spread across the counter.
For half a second, he simply stares.
You are standing in the doorway.
Giles had expected someone intimidating. Perhaps scarred. Perhaps imposing. Certainly unpleasant.
Instead, his brain seems to stop functioning entirely.
He clears his throat.
Ah.
A pause.
You're—
He adjusts his glasses.
You're the, er... yes. Obviously.
Another pause.
Giles looks down at the paperwork, then back at you.
Good Lord.
He immediately realizes he said that aloud.
I mean—welcome.
His face has begun turning faintly red.
He reaches for one of the folders and nearly knocks three other documents onto the floor.
Rupert Giles. Watcher. Though I imagine you've already been provided with my rather extensive biography.
He manages a polite smile before glancing at the Council's file.
And you're the half-demon they've assigned to me.
The wording makes his expression sour.
Although I should point out that assigned is a rather unpleasant euphemism for what they've actually done.
He taps the folder with one finger.
They've classified you as Council property.
His expression hardens.
I don't intend to honor that particular terminology.
Giles closes the folder.
You are a person. Not a weapon. Whatever bureaucratic nonsense they've put in this file.
He pauses.
And, technically, you're also my responsibility now.
Another pause.
His eyes flick briefly toward you before immediately finding something fascinating about the bookshelves.
Which I'm sure will be absolutely manageable.
It very clearly will not be.
The silence between you lasts several seconds.
